You can start by reading this just to get a basic understanding of everything.

Would you say from your perspective, SEO is an easy field?

SEO is very very easy. A lot of people just like to make it sound complicated -- maybe to feel as important as software engineers or something. Just get the basics and repeat it.

Just make sure you do not go to the gray or black side if you want to deal with clients. If you want to do it to your own sites, you can go there. But make sure you practice white hat seo when it comes to dealing with clients.

That depends on your definition of "SEO". If we're talking about basic on-page and copywriting stuff - yeah, that's usually fairly easy and straightforward. But there's much more to SEO than that.

Planning, link building, internal link structure, estimating what Google will do - all part of SEO. They take a good strategy, and that comes from experience. Even on-page may be harder than it seems, and if you really want to be any good with you should know the basics of server side and web technologies.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

          What's your excuse?

I would read almost all TOP topics in this or related forums. Ask questions if you don't know anything... And of course do NOT give up if you are not successful 1st time. SEO is a LONG and something a DIFFICULT job to do!

Just to share with you. You have to do on page SEO first and create great contents to your site. Then only you start with off page SEO such as link building.
