Today? They're both equally important. 1998 - onpage, 2010 - offpage

You've got to be paying as much attention to what you're doing when you're building pages onsite as to where / how you're getting your links. (Enough you're?)

Agree. But now I don't care much about my on page, but still focusing on off page factors ( since this will determine if my site will get penalized or not ).

It also depend. If you don't rely only on SEO to drive traffic to your site then the on page is not necessarily important.

Both on page and off page seo are important. However, off page seo has more of an effect on a site's rankings. That is, if a site has enough high quality backlinks, it can rank for a keyword that isn't even located anywhere on page. Google the keyword: click here , to see what I mean.

I think both on page and off page SEO are important for any website promotion. In on page optimization you have to make changes to your website's source page, While off page SEO techniques helps to get backlinks for your website. Check your on page factors properly, it will help you to increase quality of your website.

Get your on-page ducks in order first. Then deal with off-page factors. They are bot moving targets, with off-page SEO being far more volatile than on-page SEO.

Doing poorly on either of them will kill your rankings and send your site to oblivion, perhaps never to recover.

Lastly, if you play with fire - as in black-hat on and off-page SEO tactics, be prepared to get burned. Just like you and me, Google doesn't like to get scammed!

Will make it as simple as possible, so you can decide

1. I can rank a site with NO content and only backlinks for a competitive niche (Offpage)
2. I can't rank a site with perfect onpage in a competitive niche and NO backlinks (Onpage)

Not saying they shouldn't be combined, just saying what ranks a page (not a site, Google ranks pages.....)

Well, I think almost everyone in this thread is talking about "which is more important onpage or offpage" but I think that OP has asked that what is more important on onpage and off page seo. Anyway onpage seo includes optimizining all the onpage factors like title,meta,alt tag..... almost each of them carries its own weight you can't leave one and go forward with the other factors. As far as off page is concerned there are somethings that needs most attention is the quality of content and the backlinks. You need to understand that relevancy of backlinks is must. You need to be very alert with the content it should be more rich and at the same time it will not be copied from any source.

We cannot survive without water and air. On page and Off page SEO works just the same way for a website. Without backlinks you cannot rank your site and without adding different posts on a daily basis you cannot update your site.

It always depends on your competition. If you are trying to rank for a competitive term you wont be able to do it without some good backlinks, no matter how good is your onpage.

Instead, if you try to rank for a non competitive keyword you will be okey just with a good onpage.
