PPC: I Don't Understand

I am researching PPC and affiliate marketing. I came across a paid ad that looked like this:

Generic Niche Title
Ad Copy Sales Pitch
Ad Copy Sales Pitch
NicheURL.com

However, when you click the ad, it does not go to NicheURL.com. It goes to a separate landing page. I manually entered the NicheURL.com and it has no page. It is either parked or not sold.

Is this common (putting a different URL in the ad than the destination)?

If so, should I own the URL?

I presume the reason to do this is because it looks better in the ad?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What you're describing is actually a violation of policy for the big networks like Google & Bing/Yahoo!.

The display and destination URL's must match in domain...subs are ok, but they have to be on the same root.

The ad you described will eventually be disapproved and come down. I would not recommend this strategy.

Your display URL should be either the same as the landing page or at least the home page URL of your website. Doing things such as what you are describing could potentially cost you visitors and ultimately customers.

Don't follow behind things that you see others doing, especially when it's clearly wrong.

    Wishing you much success,
