I direct link to the merchant's sales page using the keywords found in the page source. The keywords are also returned by the Google Keyword Tool when I enter the merchant URL to find keywords related to the content on the page. The merchant site got the usual About Us, Contact, Private Policy pages. However I got quality score of 4 due to poor landing page.
How can I increase the QS? Do I need my own landing page?
#landing #page #poor
  • That's not much info... but apparentaly yes you need a
landing page, if the QS was 4 as you've said... "due to
    poor landing page."

Now, have you tried checking the CONTEXT of the keywords
in Google and check if there are any ads for that keyword
and for the country and language you are targeting?

See if by analysing the CONTEXT per keyword if you
can draw more pointers. Try also using the keywords
you are targeting in the ad to create a high quality
and relevant ad for the users. This helps QS issues!

I'm not sure what you mean by CONTEXT. When I search on Google for this keyword, there is an ad with the same display URL ie. another advertiser is doing direct linking to this merchant's sales page as well. I put 1 keyword in 1 ad group and the keyword is in the title of the ad. I guess I just have to create my own landing page. The reason I want to direct link is that I want to test first.

Do you have all the keywords in one adgroup?
If so that's probably a big part of your problem.

Each group of keyword phrases should be in it's own adgroup and have it's own ad which includes the keyword in the headline or text of the ad.

        For instance:
        Adgroup: Dog training

        Ad: Dog Needs Training?
Learn How To Make Him Obey!
        Free Course Shows You How.

        Keywords:
        Dog training book
        dog training course
        dog training tips

        Adgroup: dog barking

        Ad: Dog Barking?
Learn How To Make Him Stop!
        Free Course Shows You How.

        Keywords:
        prevent dog barking
        stop dog barking
        dog won't stop barking

        etc..etc...

It means finding the ads other advertisers are running
and see if that's the problem. Sometimes you can find

        a) more than one competitor per ad (many DL advertisers)
        b) you can find that a specific keyword has no ads (which is bad)
        c) you can find that the organic search results have such strong
ad copy that it can be hard in some cases to compete with them
for the CTR of a specific keyword. (happens in fewer cases)

In your case the problem is "a)" and the fact the landing
page from the advertiser might have content which is not
100% optmized for the keywords you are targeting (nothing
you can do here, unless you develop your own landing page)

This might be part of the problem. You need to bid HIGH
first until you can get solid CTRs, per keyword. Then you
get some ad history, the QS will improve as a result of
high CTR and you can lower your bids... say after 100
to 200 clicks. Now, this only 50% of the answer.

The other 50% is you would be better off in all cases
with a landing page from a sole QS point of view.

Now if I were you I would first try to bid HIGH and
see if you can make it work. Then proven the keyword
converts, you can decide to create your own landing page
and improve even more the QS.

This is good and should help with your QS.
