Expired domains in New Zealand - useless?

Hey warriors,

Been looking to snap up some local expired domains in New Zealand (.co.nz etc) to start building a PBN.

Only problem is, there's no such thing as pre-release here.

If a domain owner fails to renew, the domain gets deleted, and they get a 90 day "grace period" to renew the domain.

If they don't, then it gets released to the public on the 91st day.

Unfortunately, as soon as a domain name expires (even before it's released to the public), the whois details are updated to publicly reveal that the domain name has been cancelled:

domain_datecancelled: 2014-04-13

I imagine this is a pretty obvious footprint for Google to discover.

Anyone have any thoughts here?

If it's a good domain buy the darn domain! If this is anything to worry about every site with co.nz backlinks is screwed right? I don't think so.
