Redirection of 404 error pages to Homepage.

Hello friends,

While working for my recent project, I got an issue relate to 404 pages. The Webmaster tool is showing 6 thousands 404 pages. How I should fix this, someone suggest me to redirect 404 to homepage.


My question : Is it fine to redirect all 404 to homepage? or any other Idea.

    No, keep 404 pages as they are. Give a link to homepage maybe but do not redirect them anywhere. The reason is simple. 404 pages are meant to tell the visitor that the page they are looking for does not exist. It will be frustrating to redirect them to the homepage or another page.

    Check the webmaster tool's report and see why there are 404 errors. Missing pages, missing files, broken links etc.? For example even if you don't have a robots.txt file (which is not necessary to have) you may get 404 error reporting. If the webmaster tool is not providing the broken links in detail, check Awstats in your hosting account if that is available.
