2 domain names - 1 website - best strategy?

hi folks,

ok I've got a new client who has 2 domain names at present. Both are pointing to the same website.

Domain Name 1: Primary domain name - myclientscompanyname.com
Domain Name 2: Secondary domain name - myclientscompanynameandagoodkeyword.com

At the moment, the client has a 301 permanent redirect setup for Domain name 2 to go back to domain name 1.

They also have about 20 backlinks to each domain name (it's a pretty new site).

The client uses domain name 1 in it's offline material and then trys to use domain name 2 in it's online marketing.

Is this divide and conquer approach a bad idea? Domain name 2 is more keyword rich but it not really suitable for offline marketing as it is too long.

Domain name 1 is short and snappy but I'm afraid they will lose some good ranking factors if this becomes the sole domain used for online marketing/seo given the absence of the important keyword which is in Domain name 2.

Is it better to just stick with 1 domain to stop diluting pagerank?
Is there any way to check if the 301 redirect is working correctly and google is sending all it's pagerank love back to domain name 1?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

But I'm not sure as to w

I had a client like that, I wouldn't be surprised if he's the same one, lol. He's not around Grand Prairie or Dallas, is he? Just kidding, I know it's not the same because you said the 1st/prim. domain is short.

Divide and conquer isn't a bad approach, but that's not what this is. This is sit and get conquered. The one with real content will do well while the other just sits there. This should be approach you take about a year or 2 down the road when both sites are generating enough traffic.

If I were you, I'd make the 2nd site a blog site and hire someone to write a dozen articles related to your client's market every month. This will allow the 2nd site to constantly have new content and continuously build up more link juice. You can figure out what to do from there.
