I've heard Adwords is pretty good, but only when you have a big budget. My budget isn't huge but it isn't exactly small. I have $XXX to spend. Do you think this is okay or do you think I need thousands in order to get results?

Depends on how hard the phrase or keyword is to rank.. Have you created a page on your site specifically for that word or phrase ?? Write an article with over 800 words and use your h1 h2 tags and alt text a couple images and build a couple quality links to pg?? If all that still isn't ranking your keyword or whatever ur using than try Adwords out. But you might wanna set a daily cap and see how much each click is gonna cost ya. And see through analytics if it's paying off.

Adwords is mainly used by people that want INSTANT traffic. It's not a good way to get visitors if the budget is low. With about $100, you would use them in about 1 month, then the website won't get more traffic. You should do a really good design, choose the RIGHT audience to promote to (in Adwords!) and you should hope to be in a profit after this month (from comissions for example). Think about this before starting!

    Depends. You can try!
Some niches need deep pockets before you start making money. It might even take several months to steer the campaigns towards best ROI.

There is also another use case that I can think of.
Even if you do the best SEO, there are like handful of keywords that you can rank for. There are other keywords that you may not get rank for, but you want to be there when someone searches for it.
Also, if you are competing in a market that less educated people (educated about internet usage and difference between paid ad and organic ad I mean), people may click on paid ads anyways, so you might need to consider being there if your ROI makes sense.

Adwords can work extremely well. Better than virtually any other type of traffic.

(Bing Ads isn't too bad either; lower volume but also lower avg CPCs.)

Yes, keywords in some markets are expensive, but if you know what you're doing, set up and manage your campaigns right, and approach it scientifically (test, measure, optimize), you can get better ad positions at lower avg CPCs than most competitors (as well as get cheaper conversions) and establish a solid foothold in the market.
