TIP: Check your Google ranking for non-local results!

I have a website that comes up high in Google but the results are deceiving.

Up until a few weeks ago I noticed that Google used to say the listings were based upon local results (it must have based my search on my DSL providers point of origin). Then it offered an option to turn off local results and see the results as other people would. (Now it looks like that got rid of the national option and are only showing local results.)

My ranking was dramatically different: #1 when localized #9 nationally.

I found this tool that lets me see my site's rankings in Google from a random IP:

http://scroogle.org/

Then select "Scroogle Scraper".

As of two minutes ago I am #2 locally and #5 nationally (out of "about" 125,000,000 results).

Try it out and see if Scroogle produces different results than you are getting from your direct Google search. You might be shocked to learn you aren't doing as well as you though you were.

Scroogle, that's pretty funny. Thanks for the tool.

I guess now google is doing more geo location on your ip address when you search, and results can vary considerably, right?

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

I don't know what the deal is. I think Google's algorithm is fairly sharp though. If you search for something like "internet marketing" it goes global but if you search for "dominos pizza" it looks locally.

That's an awesome site, thank you I just bookmarked it.

Another good way to see how you rank is to use the following site:

    www.seocritique.com/datacentertool/

It gives you the option to check your ranking across Google's datacenter IPs.
