Anchor Text Diversity & Google Patent Insights

I know several users here who subscribe to the idea that anchor text diversity is not important, in fact you can look to the SERPs right now for sites in the top spots with over 90% exact anchor text match.

However, I just stumbled upon a post from late last year from seo by the sea. In the article it discusses a patent where google seeks to devalue artificially inflating rankings through links. One of the methods cited includes "anchor text spamming" involving acquiring a large number of pages linking to a particular page using the same anchor text to get that page to rank highly for that text in search results.

It's not about anchor text diversity. Never has been, never will be.

You cannot control how people link.

It's all about detecting webspam. BIG difference.

And it's all about people trying to get arounf webspam filters,
so it gets nonsensical. Some clown who heard a guy who
knew a guy who knows a guy said something about google
cracking down on anchor text. So the clown decides to
come up with some natural anchor diversity to avoid being
labeled as webspam. Instead of just stop doing webspam.
Idiots think they can do webspam still, just diversivy anchor
      text.

It's not about anchor text. It's about webspam and how to detect
      it.

Real, normal webmasters don't even give webspam or anchor
text "diversity" a second thought. Probably leading to the 90%
      thing the OP stated.

One has to put patents into perspective. It takes years to get
them. Google has been working on this stuff for 10 years plus.
