Non Relevant High PR Backlink Comments?

Hey lads and ladies

What are YOUR thoughts on this.

I recently did a search of inbound links to a web 2.0 (ish) site that allows users to post their own content, create their own blogs etc. Well, many of the links were high Pr (6, 5, 4) COMMENT links on non relevant blog posts.

IE - a link on a pr6 PAGE about electronics (linking TO a dating product review on page 1 of google)

Obviously - the BEST type of link is Relevant AND High PR - but what are your thoughts on using SOME of these to point to a brand NEW site?

I'm using the practice of searching my competitors backlinks - but in this case the competitor is a huge authority site in many niches...

Usually I go the private blog network route, and I do those quite well. While I HAVE dabbled in blog commenting before, it's usually for RELEVANT content and the PR is usually 2-4, not 5 or 6

Thanks!

I would probably buy a new domain, point the links at that domain, and then link from there to my site. You siphon off some of the PR that way, and provide yourself with a relevant link.

So use them for tiers - that could work and I get to keep my money domain fairly safe

    Thanks Mike

I'm all about sending links from relevant pages... but just out of habit. It's never actually been proven that its a requirement.

6 Changes We Always Thought Google Would Make to SEO that They Haven't Yet - Whiteboard Friday - Moz

    Excerpt:

So number one, a lot of people in the SEO field, and even outside the field, think that it must be the case that if links really matter for SEO, then on-topic links matter more than off-topic links. So, for example, if I'm linking to two websites here about gardening resources, A and B, both about gardening resources, and one of those comes from a botany site and the other one comes from a site about mobile gaming, well, all other things being true, it must be that the one about botany is going to provide a stronger link. That's just got to be the case.

And yet, we cannot seem to prove this. There doesn't seem to be data behind it or to support it. Anyone who's analyzed this problem in-depth, which a number of SEOs have over the years -- a lot of people, who are very advanced, have gone through the process of classifying links and all this kind of stuff -- seem to come to the same conclusion, which is Google seems to really think about links in a more subject/context agnostic perspective.
You'll be safe linking from it today, but I always plan for Penguin 9.0. Best to do like Mike said and create a relevant buffer tier. Since you know what you're doing with PBNs, the best way to do this is to buy a cheap auction or expired site in your niche that doesn't have great stats. Then use that as your relevance shifter.

I personally wouldn't send Non Relevant High PR Backlink Comments to a brand new niche site, but as long as the outbound links on those blogs are less than 50, then you should be ok. I actually discovered a website that was ranking with these types of links alone and it shocked me.
