What are the best practices today for on page SEO? In particular what is the best way to optimize on site content for keywords? Separate page/post for each long tail keyword?

What is the best SEO plugin to use and is there good documentation available for the plugin you recommend. I currently have Platinum SEO Pack and have no idea of what all the options mean so primarily find myself just using the title and description for each page I create.

Also is it best to always have an image on each page/post? Is naming the image after a keyword "old school spammy"? For local sites should I include the location or phone in the ALT text?

Some time back, sites using more than one page for each long tail keyword were penalized when the Panda algorithm came out. This usually happened with big content farm sites that had tens of thousands of pages. But, it might still be a possibility even with a smaller site.

If you have many similar keywords, you might find a way to use them on just one or two pages rather than spreading so much similar keyword content over so many pages.

You could optimize alt tags or blog post tags with these additional keyword terms and incorporate some of the terms into your meta description.

Though your best bet would be to simply narrow down your list of keywords that you are planning to use so that you don't really have so many to work with. Ranking highly for ten keywords is a lot better than ranking low for one hundred.

You could start with good Meta tags which you should choose wisely. Don't forget the title should be unique in every page (if you have the time to do it!). Also, H1 tag is recommended for your main Keyword and a few H2 tags for your secondary keywords. Don't forget Alt and Title tags (for images and links!)

How are secondary keywords best generated? Should Alt tags be secondary keywords? Can you explain what title tags are for links?

One of the best but often overlooked aspects for SEO is flickr. For example, I am a music entreprenuer and have recently launched a drum school in Mumbai called Trakadoom. Now I have inserted a Flickr widget feed in the footer of my site. I regularly update my Flickr photo account and correspondingly the Flickr widget on my website is also updated. What is commendable is that Google recognizes my my dynamic Flickr feed on the website and shows up all the latest images whenever someone types in the keywords to get onto my website! Do not underestimate the power of dynamic photo content to enhance your on-page SEO techniques.

If you are getting confused as to where to start I would:

      For Wordpress:

      1. Pick a main keyword
      2. Create your posts with 700-1000 words
      3. Include your keyword 1 time per 100 words at minimum. I keep mine at 1.5% max.
      4. Download a SEO plug in and fill in the Title, description and keywords.
      5. Include a photo or 2 and include a Youtube video on the same subject (I try to get one without aff links)

You will find that few will watch your video, but it can help with on page.

Get this down and start building and learning more on page factors.

  • My advice is to make sure each page stands on its own as a topic. Do not create multiple pages about the same exact thing in order to optimize for different keywords. Instead, stick to single, well-written, citation-worthy, topic pages and optimize them for multiple keywords. This can be another good reason to use long-form content.

Write unique descriptions for every page. They will not change your rankings; but, well-written descriptions can increase click-through rate.

Good rule of thumb if you're not sure: Keep all tags natural but include your keywords in there.

    Example:

TITLE: Your #1 KEYWORD Source - WEBSITE

    H1 Tag: Is KEYWORD Reliable?

IMAGE TAGS: Person Showing Off His KEYWORD

    You get the idea.

TIP: If you want to get longtails and related keywords, put them in content but always keep density down 3% for your keywords.

This way, you don't have to create 1 page per keyword, that would be brutal to your mind in how you keep on repeating the same idea in different pages just so you could suit it to your keywords. It should be the other way around: the keywords will be in the pages, not the pages built for the keywords.
