Ok you are getting a very advanced SEO lesson today. You wont find too many warriors willing to go to the trouble to do this. I feel generous.

So here is a snippet from your page source...

    <meta name="keywords" content="pest control melbourne, melbourne pest control"/>

You are only going after 2 keywords here and they are very close. Try and diversify. You will see what I mean below. I didn't see any H1 tags (or H2,H3) for the keywords. I didn't see any tags either. Pest control Melbourne is a good keyword. your competition is beating you because they have Melbourne in the URL. I am guessing here but I see a trend. If I were you I would make my homepage on http://melbourne.pestaway.com.au/ or
http://pestaway.com.au/melbourne ...This way it is URL.

    Now see screenshots below......

You will notice that when I begin to type in the keyword a lot of other suggestions are coming up. Right?? These are searches that people are currently using to find your services. This is the best keyword tool EVER, You need to incorporate ALL of these in your copy( which you need to adjust). They way it works for now is that....that I and a few others can see is that google reads the diversity of the keyword content to get a feel of what the page is about. So you have ...melbourne, '' west, eastern suburbs, western suburbs, ''price, ''cost.

These are all beautiful keywords to target!

You can see these at the bottom of the screen (this is google.com.au BTW) for more suggestions
    .

I would charge a premium for this info, and in fact I do. Today this lesson is free for you ;-)

Hope it helps in some way.
    James

"Very advanced SEO lesson" - and you start to talk about meta keywords? Seriously, what's going on here? Is this sarcasm that I can't understand?

Added: the advice in itself isn't bad, but the site clearly targets more keywords than what happens to be in the meta keywords. For example, they've got a boatload of insects targeted.

Uh..., that info has been available for free on forums since it first existed years ago.

BTW, you can squeeze more keywords out of the suggestion search If you turn Off instant results & search from the Google home page. You owe me $5 for that info. lol.

For me the site is on the first page for "pest control melbourne" in Google's local results block, and on the second page for the actual site link. In my opinion that's fairly good result. Competition seems quite stiff.

I'd improve the front page to have clear message and call to action. Now it's a wall of text. This might also improve your bounce rates, which in turn might slightly improve rankings eventually. I don't really like much of the content, because it feels sort of "generated" or generic business filler.

I've got no access to Majestic SEO or other backlink tools right now, but I suspect backlink profile could be stronger. There's almost always room for improvement.

I'm not going to give you stupid advices on how to "make the first page on google.com.au". But I'm going to give you advice about your website. Everything below menu on your website look unprofessional. It's not just how to get people on your website, they need to stay on and call you. You do not need social sharing buttons on your website, contrary to popular belief, especially because nobody share your content ... I see you have your business for 20 years, I do not see why you have to rush with rankings on google.

    good luck

Thanks for the advice so far. I administer over 200 websites for SEO very successfully. It is just the www.pestaway.com.au site that is giving me problems. I am happy to pay anyone who can give me a solid reason as to why this site struggles to get on the first page for the search term pest control melbourne . Getting onto Google Places/Maps is easy. I want an organic ranking on the first page. I have instructed Google to remove all backlinks. Perhaps it is the canonicalization? I post multiple articles which rank all over the place. There is a reason for my poor ranking and i cannot find it.

Let's say hypothetically that this website ends up first on google.com.au. What good is it going to bring to his owner, people are going to bounce back to google. Ask the owner, does he want more traffic or more business, and then redirect your effort and make this website conversion happy.

To be honest I don't see anything wrong but I only took a quick look at the link profile, cache/text version, site:domain.com. It all looks fine to me.

I have no idea why you would disavow relevant links, the links I looked at are all pest/bug related.

Here's my humble advice and I'm no popular expert

NOTE: Manual searches made using my AU proxy and through google.com.au

Since you have given your exact site as well as keywords you are after, it makes it easier for this analysis... thanks for that. In this case, I'd skip on-site SEO analysis and off-site SEO analysis and simply combined them to the competition analysis so we can draw out the common things found among the sites sitting on top of search results.

    AGAINST COMPETITORS

Your top 4 competitors for "pest control melbourne" (I opted to focus on with melbourne keyword first as that is easier):

    1. Pest Control Experts – Rentokil Australia
    2. Home - Jim's Pest Control Australia
    3. Exopest
    4. Dawson’s Pest Control | Home Page

    Graph for Comparison: CLICK HERE

What we can draw from that graph:

    1. You have more social signals, a better domain rank than almost everyone, way more referring domains/pages but they are ranking better? Weird, right?

    2. Rentokil has A LOT of image links pointing to it but it is at #4 so that isn't the secret formula here.

    3. Rentokil has a lot of redirects (shady SEO?) but again, it's at #4 and our goal is #1.

Not much here... let's look at individual backlink profiles:

Let me look at yours first (link velocity here and anchor text distribution)

You're making a push with the new links, good. But wait, why are there so many "pests" there? Shouldn't a good anchor text distribution look more natural?

Hmm, let's take a look at the top 4 competitors.

Let's start with dawson's since he's top 1. (link velocity and anchor text dist)

WOW! Natural anchors!? How did you do it Dawson? Let me look at your links perhaps they are so awesome.

    Tracking DOFOLLOW links, see this.

Natural anchors from high PR authoritative sites... perhaps he's just lucky, let's take a look at another competitor: exopest.

Exopest's anchor text distribution. Not gunning with new links either.

Referring links: NICEEEE, clean dofollow links from .au's!

Based from what we have so far, I think I can make a conclusion in the off-site part of the website. Let's move on to on-site SEO.

    KEYWORD DENSITY

    KEY PHRASE: "pest control"

    1. Dawson’s Pest Control | Home Page - 34 words out of 308 words. More than 10%.

    2. Exopest - 20 words out of 400+. Around 5%.

    3. Pest Control Melbourne Treatment Inspections - 26 words out of 440+. More than 5%

You're pretty much near them so it's definitely not the occurrences of the key words on the homepage.

Let's take a look at METAs: SEE.

I think I have enough... I'm going to suggest to you actionable steps now:

    1. Stop trying too hard. You are using anchor texts too much, this is 2014, not 2010. Go for branding and natural anchors.

    2. Get links from high PR domains. You have quantity, they have quality. Which is better? Look at the SERPs.

    3. Get links from sites hosted in AU. They have way more sites from AU (dofollow too) AND the PRs are pretty high.

    4. More and more low quality links are not the answer. Stop building too much, it is not helping at this moment.

That's all I can think of now.

    Just to add in:

    1. Fix your text spacing.

    2. Put an actionable step or button or form AFTER one reads the text so that means you should put one on the bottom part.

    3. Where's the link to your business pages so I can see reviews?

    4. Where's the link to social media profiles so I can see what others have to say socially?

    5. How will I be convinced to hire your service when I don't see anything unique by the way you present yourself in the website?

    And many more...

I need to take a bath so that's all for now.

    Just my two cents.

Really? Isn't pest control one of those socially stigmatizing subjects like STDs or porn? I'm not actually certain about this because I come from cold climate where major pest problem almost requires that you live in a pile of filth, but if I had it I would not want anyone to know.

I guess you might get people to share your content on the topic, but it has to be really good and have just the perfect angle.

Right on the money. People assume way too much that since it is a local business, social media marketing is good.

In this case, there are certain niches where people will ALMOST ALWAYS stray away from sharing proudly online such as payday loans, pests, divorce lawyers, etc.
