Google penalty has been lifted

I spent much of the last year having links removed and submitting disavow lists in an attempt to get my domain back in good graces with google. Finally in Feb I got a message saying the penalty had been lifted! My links have dropped from about 100k to about 20k during the process.

My Question: The penalty was removed 4 months ago and my google traffic has not returned. What do I have to do to build some authority back into my domain name?

I suppose that either your site or your back link profile triggered some algorithm based penalties as well.

Another reason could be that the 20k links are not by far so strong as the 100k links you once had and thus you rank lower.

However what I said first seems more likely.

You may be outranked for terms that you ranked before. The reduced count in links may have caused this.Work to rank for terms and expect google traffic again.

I agree however no matter how hard I work I cannot break any of my keywords into the top 1,000. I'm adding new, original content but nothing. I'm wondering if I need to just work on building authority and how to do it. The site is listed in DMOZ.

Throughout the whole process I have been getting about 300 uniques a day from google however I used to get 2,000+

Reconsideration request for http://www.*********.com/: Manual spam action revoked

Previously the webspam team had taken action on your site because we believed it violated our quality guidelines. After reviewing your reconsideration request, we have revoked this action.

Spammy links can work to boost a website's ranking, right up to the point that they trigger a penalty, whether it is algorithmic or manual. By removing those links, you were able to get the penalty removed, but you also are not going to have the same strength in your backlink profile. It is only natural that your rankings are going to be far lower.

There are a lot of factors involved in here... is your on-site SEO settings still as bad/average as to when the penalty was given?

What does your new unique content look like (onsite)?

Have you structured your website in par with the guidelines of recent Google updates?

I am asking these questions because you have focused on the off-site aspect of your website but didn't mention anything on the on-site settings.

Good points, I think I'm pretty good at this however probably should hire somebody to go through the site and be sure onsite SEO is optimal for current google algorithm.

Also what kind of link approach should I be taking at this point?

To be honest, it is impossible to suggest a specific link approach without seeing the site. Without that information, it would be the generic route: quality links from different sources.

Likely affected by an algorithm penalty. Even though you had the manual penalty removed your site is still subject to the same algorithm as everyone else.

I'd suggest making sure your link profile is at a good starting point before building new links. Keep your head up though you are almost there.
