Hi guys, I'm new to affiliate marketing and right now I'm trying to build my first niche site, but I can't choose keywords because I don't clearly understand how to analyze keyword competition. So maybe anyone could help me to get clear on how to analyze keyword competition by answering my questions:

1. Do I need to put quotation marks around keyword phrase when I'm analyzing my competitors? because as I undestand when I put quotation marks around keyword it gives me websites who are trying to rank for that keyword phrase.

2. should I ignore websites who show up when I remove quotation marks?

3. if top results are authority sites wich doesn't have exact keyword phrase should I try to rank for that phrase? for example when I search for "how to improve vision" the first website is wikihow and the title of the page is "3 Ways to Improve Your Vision Naturally". Does this means that I should try to rank for keyword phrase "how to improve vision" and I sould beat wikihow easily?

3. if top websites are authority sites such as wikihow, wikipedia, doctoroz, but doesn't have any exact word in the title and url from my keyword phrase. does it means that I should out rank them easily?

4. if top pages from authority sites such as wikihow, wikipedia, doctoroz doesn't have any exact word in the title and url from my keyword phrase. does it means that I should out rank them easily?

Any answer would be appreciated .

The easy method to find easy to rank keywords for any niche is to use tools like long tail pro. I use them almost on daily basis to find low competitive highly profitable keywords to target in the articles.

If the averegae moz PA of the sites ranking in Page 1 for the keyword is above 40 it would take long time or difficult to rank, between 40 and 30 are medium competitive and 30 to 20 are low competitive and anything less than 20 would be an rare find and you will be able to rank on page 1 for those keywords with just very few backlinks.

You can use similar tools like market samurai also. However doing the keyword research manually can take a lot of time and will yield very low results compared to the tools. However for brainstorming the keywords, manual method is best. But to find the difficulty to rank manual process will be very painful.

Google keyword planner is the best tool ever for keyword research. I believe that the best approach for the keyword research to look out at the competition and search volume. Based on these two factors the keyword selection is done up. Just type a keyword what ever comes to your mind for the niche that you focus on. And you will get a clear picture of the related keyword ideas as well with all the relevant details.

I actually look at the normal Google search, and then from there see whos ranking in the top 10-20 and start to analyze their sites, backlinks, and link metrics.

This helps you understand better whats ranking and why. Focus on incoming links primarily, to the page ranking and the domain as a whole.
