Cooccurrence/Cocitation vs linkbuilding

Lately I'm starting to see some articles and posts about cooccurrence (sharing keywords with other sites in your niche) and cocitation (having your brand mentioned on other sites in your niche, especially major/popular cites) as growing in importance for SEO as linkbuilding slowly declines.
None of these articles are claiming cooccurrence and cocitation are more important than linkbuilding-yet. Some are predicting that as the trend continues, they will eventually become more important that linkbuilding.

Like anyone involved in content marketing these days I try to keep up with changes in SEO, but the discussions on this one are getting into the esoteric level for me. How important do folks here think it is to understand and implement cooccurrence and cocitation? Is this something we as marketers need to worry about now, or just keep an eye on for the future?

Links can be weighted less and they probably will be over the next several years. But no way can they be completely eliminated as a ranking factor. It's been tried before and the SERPs are horrific. There are more technical reasons but I have to get back to serving my clients SEO needs. If you PM me I might elaborate a bit.
