How to rank #1 again!

I have a website that ranked number one on Google for a specific keyword for a year or so. Ranking number one gives me a weekly income of around $1,000 or more by selling my software on the page. Over the course of the past few months competition has arose for this keyword and my site ranks between 1 and 3. When it is number one again my income is $1,000-1,200 and when it is number 3 my income is cut to $300 a week.

I am completely lost as how to consistently rank number one again. Sometimes I think Google purposlely rotates my website with the others on a weekly basis and no matter what I do it's always the same result and no improvement on staying number one.

Any suggestions?

Did you stopped doing SEO. If yes, don't need to stop in any manner. Stopping means your competitors have a chance to kick out your keywords and take a place. Start doing the SEO again with the high quality post and get links.

I have read that Google does this dance on websites where they suspect someone is using blackhat techniques. And, the reason being, they don't want the webmaster to know specifically which methods are working. The end result is how that site slides down to page 100 and is never heard from again. That could be something to worry about.

Simple, you need more links and possibly better onsite optimization.

    Start with links though.

"You need mooore links". Like Warcraft. I call that zombie-SEO.

Yeap. Everybody should buy more links. Everybody should catch a penalty and cry-cry-cry.

      Bad advice, my friend.

Thumbs up for this comment. I'd try to get everything I can from the sites that have passed you for your keywords.

Do they look more trustworthy? Is the content better? How good are your titles and meta descriptions compared to them?

Are they doing something in the content that might push them ahead? Keywords and such.

What about the link profiles for the actual page and the whole site? How does your and their's compare?

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.

Before you go crazy with buying poor or risky links I would setup an additional website and rank that one, and at the same time work slowly but steadily on the site that rotates between #1 and #3

Perhaps you might outkick one of those in the top 3 for good with your 2nd site and just rotate with only the other guy!

It's all about dominating that 1st page, and if it can't be done with 1 site do it with 10 sites, heck you could even have 1-2 complete churn & burn sites on the side to grab those spots.

Obvious weight your costs vs other ways of advertising as well.

I usually dominate the first page with this keyword with a Google Ad, a Youtube video, a blog post, and posts from my Google Plus account. None of this really matters however, unless I get that top spot. I think I could get more back links and could use some suggestions on this area.

Is it possible that Google just rotates the 3-4 pages on the top spot just because they can? Seriously, this is what it seems like.

No it seems to be more like equal in terms of strength that Google just doesn't know which one to rank better.

When I check other niches the top 3 seems to be pretty stable with no rotating at all.

Doing SEO without competitive analysis is like driving to a place you've never been, without a map, GPS, or any clue how to get from point A to point B. It's not a smart thing to do and will leave you lost. I'll show you how to analyze your website (and other factors) to uncover what you'll need to do to rank #1 on Google.

In order to understand what you have to do to get to number one on Google, you really have to understand two different things.

First you need to understand what factors Google uses to determine which page should rank there. Then you have to understand the reason behind why the page that is ranking there right now is ranking that high. So it really boils down to understanding Google and understanding your competition.

Audit your content. Is it readible? Is it typo and error free? Is it useful?

Optimize your content and you'll get more backlinks than your competitors. If your site is little more than a sales page, Google will rank other sites over you if those sites have content.

Don't worry about it too much!. The dance is pretty normal and in my opinion happens because Google is deciding whether to push you down or up when other competing sites also do some good work to grab that spot.

If you haven't gone down from the #1-#3 spot then it means you're still good in eyes of Google. I will strongly suggest against buying any links, if you're too concerned just throw one high quality link at your page and it will get stable sooner.

Also STOP doing changes to your site structure/theme, that is another reason for the dance.

If you're selling it, why not buy traffic? You may need to test a fair amount, but once you get profitable you can get more sales without worrying about rankings... organic traffic becomes gravy.

Where can you buy organic traffic that converts and is not just bot alexa traffic?

Other than PPC and facebook ads etc.

Is there a service that works for niches?

No traffic is ever guaranteed to convert into sales, If it was, everyone would have a 100% conversion rate.

Look at sites that are relevant to your niche. Where do people hang out that would buy your product? If you personally use the same niche/product your selling, what sites do you hang out on? There's your traffic source.

If this website is your only means of income I'd be a bit worried.
However, if you have held your position before and have the DA you shouldn't worry. Most competitors these days use blackhat seo tactics that get detected in either days to months.
If I were you, I'd have a e-mail subscription system in place for prospects to sign up to so you can always talk to your audience in case you do fall off the deep end.
However, if you feel like your competition is using blackhat tactics you can always report their website.
Hang in there; you'll be fine.

    This is totally ridiculous.

The top two sites probably have a better on and off site SEO than yours.

Some of the things you can do is,

    1. Analyze your competitors links and get links from where they are getting.

    2. Build more quality links.

These kind of thing happens if you stop building backlink and it simply tells you it's time to begin again or the top site owners knows what they are doing and have better off site SEO than you.

I would suggest you to keep doing what you're doing that got you to number 1 because that obviously worked. DO NOT ever discontinue your SEO for any matter, even if you hit #1 because guess what, your competition isn't stopping. Just post a few links here and there every week or so even if you hit #1 because those links will help keep you there.

Also maybe it's just a slow month for those kinds of things. Sales and traffic will never be that consistent.

In this situation you can use some unique keywords for your website which are low competition and search volume of those keyboards should be higher or you should hire any reliable SEO services for this. If you will use high competition keywords for your website it is not easy to rank your website with those keywords.

There lies the clue as to what to do to regain your rankings. If they are outranking your site, it simply means they've done a better job at SEO than you have. You need more powerful backlinks from relevant sites if possible.

Stop worrying, just get 5 or so guest posts written with extremely high quality content and get some links from some high authority sites. That will help.

I would start with 5 per month for 3 months and then see how things are then go from there.
