Image Gallery indexed in Google - Good or Bad for SEO

Sometimes I see sites ranking very well with large image gallery's 100+ photo's, where each image page is indexed in Google, and just 1 line of text above it or sometimes not even.
In other cases it seems that similar sites have no traction.
We know that Google doesn't like sites with a lot of "thin" pages and for Google's crawlers it's obvious impossible to make a distinction between an image gallery page and a thin content page.
What would you do? Combine multiple images per page with descriptions below it and get all additional pages deindexed? At least that's my 1st though.
For the record site I talk about has like 5 pages of written content (200 words per page) and 100+ image pages indexed (zero written content per page).
