Hey all, I just got an email from a company that wants me to work on their site - SEO the site that is. Since I've not done that kind of work for anyone else - specifically that is - I'm wondering how much I should charge them to do such a job.

So what say you?
#charge

Without the knowledge of SEO, how are you going to work on it? Ok, however, If you want to get them to top #10 on google, you can charge them US$750-1000 for a keyword.....

 I'm sorry, did I say somewhere that I have no knowledge of SEO? I am actually fairly proficient having many sites in top positions, which is why the company approached me in the first place.

I was thinking along the same lines - since it's a British company I was thinking of charging between 500 and 700 pounds. Does that sound like a reasonable asking price?

Haha! It's all good mate. Actually the more I think about the work involved, the more I'm inclined to charge a bit more than 5 to 700 quid. I did what AndyBlackSeo mentioned (thanks btw ) and looked over the site competitors and the probable keyword they will want to rank for - it will be a battle. I'll be sending them off a quote of at least 1000 quid after seeing that.

I would come at it from the perspective of:

"How much do I want to earn per day, and how many days will it take me to complete this job?"

If the answer is £500/day, and it's going to take you 10 days to optimise the site, then £5000 is your answer.

I was gonna say. You never said that you wasn't knowledgable in SEO. I would say see what kind of keywords they want to target then research them. Once you have suitable keywords see what the competition is like. That is the only way you can gauge the price. Maybe charge them a fee and then charge an additional fee if you get them into the top 3 positions. Then look at a smaller monthly fee to keep them there.

One thing you don't want to do though is under charge otherwise you may shoot yourself in the foot.

A full website analysis of their site, their competitors sites and keywords will be worth a decent amount to start off with.

If you've done SEO, you should know the amount of time involved. Multiply the time by the amount per hour you want, add your expenses (telephone, power). That's what you charge.

Remember also, it's not the amount that's important, it's how you make yourself look like you can help them improve their site. I've won many contracts knowing I was one of the highest bidder simply because I proved I can help the client.

Don't base the price on just the "SEO work", but what is required of their bottom-line. Consider their current standing in the SERP, where they need to be and what it takes to get there. Analyze them thoroughly, determine a certain point you'll be able to deliver some results and then you'll have firmer ground to stand on when you charge say 1500 pounds or more.
