Does dedicated IP Address Matter?

Yesterday I received a newsletter from some gurus I have always respected. In reading it, one of their tips for ranking a site was to purchase aged domain names and set them at various IP addresses different from your own. I promptly spent $150 on my 1st round of new domain names. I am not new to SEO but I am new to this idea of buying other, separate domains and linking them back to the site you're trying to rank.

In searching for dedicated IP addresses for SEO, I came across this article. It says in part, "A dedicated IP will not boost your SEO in any way. According to Google, a dedicated IP will not help your SEO rankings, and is not a justified expense for SEO."

Which one is correct?

Google is saying right, It does not matter what is the IP of your website in Search Engine Rankings as Matt described this almost a Year ago.

You are talking about two different things. The first statement is from people about building a network of sites. The separate IP addresses has nothing to do with rankings and everything to do with trying to make it more difficult for the network to be spotted.

The statement from Google is referring to your site's rankings, not the IP of sites linking to it.

So you're saying I do in fact need the separate IP addresses to mask the link network? Is this black hat or "shady" in some way?

If someone was trying to hide something from you, wouldn't you consider that to be shady?

A dedicated IP is nothing to do with SEO directly but it helps you to keep distance from the bad neighborhood that may happen and effect you SEO ranking is case of you have a shared IP.
