Takes Longer to Rank in 2014?

I haven't built a new site for 1-2 years, but am wondering if it's just me who finds that it is taking longer to rank than usual?

The site has only been up for a couple of weeks, all pages are indexed, but pretty much no keywords out of 40+ are ranking.

I do what I always do in terms of backlinks and previous sites I have built were ranking in just a couple of days and continue to maintain their high rankings.

So, have you noticed that the landscape has changed, or are you ranking sites as easily as you have always been able to do?

I am seeing similar results. The need for social signals has increased. Not just links but interaction as well.

Alright, along with time SEO tactics has also changes. Undoubtedly you have created some good links on the popular portal like article site, bookmarking sites, social media sites. Try to make your profile strong on these by making genuine contribution with other site members. When your page authority will increase, ranking will also improve.

If you get the right kind of backlinks your keywords does not have a lot of competition you can rank in 2 weeks so it depends. This is the wrong question to ask rather you need ask what backlinks I need to rank my site for the long term and avoid any penalties?

Today SEO has gone a step ahead and needs a qualitative approach of diversion in order to help work out for the SERP. The diversification of keywords, social signals, and yes fresh and qualitative content is a must to go with in all possible aspects of SEO.

Forget about keyword ranking, interaction and links via social media are driving SEO these days. Also, focusing your energy here can drive traffic on its own.

I am sorry but social interaction for ranking and all that is just bullshit and whoever tells you as such is an idiot who believes what Matt wants you to believe.

Its all about high quality links now but when was it not. The only thing changed is you can't just spam your site to top position anymore with low quality backlinks.

I think I agree with most of that comment. I do believe that high quality links still rule the search engines and that social interaction isn't as important as most people are making it out to be, but at the same time I do believe there might actually have a bit of an impact on your rankings. I still think your time is better spent getting good quality backlinks though

Yes, guys, we all know that high pr backlinks are the most effective, but no one seems to be addressing the question. I know what backlinks to build, but what I'm asking is whether anyone has noticed that ranking takes longer than before.

Never mind, found an interesting discussion on BHW. Seems to have overtaken WF by some distance lately.

Yes. My Amazon sites now just won't budge in the SERP's. When they do, they move quite dramatically - e.g. from #11 to #2. A year ago, it was a slow and steady gain. Now it seems like Google just doesn't want to give you a "boost" until you've earned your place for quite some time. I'm not finding it HARDER to rank, but I'm finding it takes LONGER... My site's just won't move for periods at a time; even though they should be.. A couple of weeks later, it all catches up and moves up dramatically...

Just got back from a #BrightonSEO. I was given room 404 in the hotel I stayed at. Couldn’t find it anywhere!

Not sure about taking longer but it is weirder now. Almost all the keywords i ranked for will lose their rank to infinity and then comeback to a very strong position a couple days later. The first time it happened, my heart stopped beating (it was a very important keyword for me lol) was at page 3 and no longer at page 10 even then couple days later at the #2-#1 position for various parts of the world. Ever since then, its been solid at #2 to #3 position (after some low quality backlinks later just a couple).

Not sure if this has happened to other people but i can confirm it happening for at least 3 medium difficulty keywords for me, it will either return to a really good SERP or stay the same. Now when i lose ranking for a keyword i am trying to rank, i know google is calculating what position to place me and its usually a good one.

Maybe its just my niche though, its a very time-based one and lots of sites pop up trying to rank within a short time so not sure if this doesn't happen for other niches.

Like I said, SERP movements now seem to be very dramatic as opposed to being slow-and-steady. I had the same scenario. Sitting at #10 - disappeared for a day or two. Came back #3. Nothing to worry about either way.

          Yeah. I can confirm.

One of my keywords just jumped right from #20 to #8 after two effin weeks. I made only a couple backlinks like 2 and half weeks ago and it didn't even nudge then. Then it has been doing very weird movements (the dance) the past week and i had honestly given hope after it dropped to #18 position thinking that link sucked. To login to this just now

Very annoying, I honestly can't recall now which backlink did it.

Two effin weeks!! damnit. Now how much its gonna take to hit #1 or #2.

It differs per site, some of my sites budge within days while others take weeks.

Last year it was like that as well so not much has changed, maybe Google increased the frequency of delays, like it happens more often then before.

When I started the link building for 20 of my Amazon sites at least 15 of them saw almost immidiate boosts in rankings (in 3-4 days).

In case you hardly use any exact anchor texts it can take a lot longer, one site even took 3 months before it finally popped up at page one for the main keywords (which were hardly ever used as anchors) as a client of mine decided to do it like that.

I can also confirm that new websites take way longer to rank now than before.
