Ranking Homepage against Internal Pages?

Hey Guys,

I have been hanging around the forum for a while now ( as a guest) but thought it would be a good idea to ask a few questions of my own and hopefully give back whatever and wherever I can! .

I am starting to get into affiliate marketing using clickbank to find potential products. I stumbled across a product today that I thought would be great for me to promote as it is linked to the industry that I used to work in and thought that I could use my knowledge of to create a landing page with relative ease.

Just for this example we will say that the product is a registry cleaner for your computer. I used the google keywords tool and found some suggestions with relatively high searches and low competition (according to the tool).

Lets say the suggestions were:

"registry cleaner"

"registry cleaner download"

"registry cleaner windows 7"

I then decided to check the backlinks of the pages that were ranking highly in google. I used the 6th or 7th site in the google search results. Lets say I searched for "windows 7 registry cleaner" and the site was:

"thebestregcleanerintheworld.com/windows7cleaner" made that up just now good eh?

now obviously this is not the homepage of the site. I used majesticseo and ahrefs to check the backlinks, which both come up with under 20 for the phrase that I want to rank for.

However when I check the backlinks for the homepage of the site:

"thebestregcleanerintheworld.com" it comes up with over 500.

Obviously the homepage will be ranking for many different keywords and phrases.

If I were to create a landing page and try and rank for 2 or 3 phrases, focusing on "windows 7 registry cleaner" which the other site has 20 backlinks for would I need to get more than 20 or more than 500 as the homepage of the other product has 500 backlinks.

I hope this post wasnt to long winded or confusing!

"Obviously the homepage will be ranking for many different keywords and phrases."

will it? I found that more specific internal rank better than trying to get a homepage to rank for multiple keywords.

Well this site wasnt specifically for registry cleaners, it was simply an internal page. I meant obviously THIS specific homepage was ranking for more than one keyword according to ahrefs and majesticseo. I know that focusing on a specific keyword will help the page rank better for that keyword but Im trying to deduce whether or not I will need to get more backlinks than the specific page or whether I have to get more backlinks than the homepage .

There's no one final answer to this.

Among other things, it can depend on competition, how the site is set up (where the link juice is flowing to) and the type of backlinks it has pointing to every single page.

I would create a page that targets a bunch of keywords and send just a few high quality POWERFUL backlinks to the page. Don't worry so much about quantity, unless you know for sure it's a very competitive niche...

If it's competitive... well then you know you might need more than 20 backlinks

    Cheers

      Pat,

Thanks for the response . I know that the average monthly searches are relatively low and so is the competition. When dealing with backlinks can 1 backlink that is powerful and highly targeted to the keyword that I am ranking for essentially "beat" links that have been bought?

      Thanks Again

Also I have just checked where the inbound links are coming from and it would seem that they are all coming from the Homepage of the site.
