Rank main domain or individual pages?

If i rank (get higher DA and pr) my main domain (www.domain.com) will my pages/post rank higher and do better in the serps as well? By pages/posts i mean www.domain.com/pages.

    Yes. Target internal pages with individual keywords. They will rank too if you do it properly.

      To clearify: if i only build backlinks to my main domain, NO internal pages, will the internal pages and their keyword improve in the serps?

        Yes, but you'll also need to do some internal linking. Let's say you have tons of quality links to your homepage and you wish to rank your internal pages then you need add them to your homepage.

    As i believe that if you are building links for main domain, not for internal pages, in this case your main domain is going to get a bit preference in the SERP.

    I always build links to internal pages simply because you can customize each internal page to fit the exact keyword the page ranks for.

    Do both but make sure you prioritze your main page.

    If you have an authority domain the pages become fairly easy to rank some low competition keywords may likely rank themselves though.

    Never just build links to your root domain.

    If you screw up at that level, you're gone.

    Plus - it's just not natural.

    Better work on your inner pages. When you get a good ranking in it, the main page will also rank well (as the articles are on the homepage!).

    Also don't forget that it's much easier to optimize just 1 article for a good keyword than optimize your homepage for ONLY 1 keyword.

    And last, but not least, you should also do a good sitemap where you can visit EVERY of your inner pages from the homepage (just like a wordpress and blogger blog!)

    I've alway had great success with ranking individual pages rather than my website.

    As a rule of thumb, i only optimize 1 keyword per blog post so that my individual pages are much easier to rank.

    Plus, when you have a lot of individual pages ranking, your PR of your main website will naturally increase. In other words, you'd kill 2 birds with 1 stone if you focus on 1 individual page at a time.
