Can implementing an Aweber lightbox hurt my rankings?

Hi guys,
I've been dwelling about this for days. Partner and I have been working on a website for the past 3-4 months and got it to about 1.2k daily visits (almost all of it organic searches) and I've now included an Aweber sidebar form.
And it's no BS ebooks, reports...I am running a contest and will be giving away physical products. But the signup rate is measly 1.5%.
I know that a light-box would double or triple this (at least) but I don't really know what it will do to rankings. I've seen a wide range of opinions which didn't help, so I'm turning to my fellow warriors...
If I was alone in the project, I would do it, but my partner is way more cautious and we're between a rock and a hard place right now...any experiences with implementing a light-box and how that affected your rankings are most appreciated.
