Hi all,

I am considering going with an SEO company and have asked them what I will get for my monthly fee. I asked about paid links and they replied the following...

"We also spoke about paid links, this is something I am going to hold off for in the next few weeks, Google once again made a major change in the beginning of June, and there is some talk that it is penalizing sites for Paid links - this has NOT been proven, and as you can imagine - Google's Algorithms is extremely complex, so many of the top SEO are running lots of tests to try and backwards engineer this latest change, we will then have a better understanding of what has happened in this latest shift and make a GOOD decision based on fact, not hear say."

What MAJOR changes did Google make in June? Do you think he is simply trying to avoid spending my budget on links? I thought paid links has been a controversial topic for a while now...however he implies that it wouldnt be safe using them as of beginning of June?

All comments welcome.

Google have always hated paid links so I don't understand why people use them, there are much better ways to do SEO without paying for your links, and above all if you've hired an SEO expert they should know this.

Paid links are often a necessity in extremely competitive niches, as anyone in such a niche will tell you. Rank me a site under "Credits Cards" or "Auto Insurance" and tell me you don't use paid links. Sure, Google doesn't like many things, but we're not in this game to appease them, we're in it to do what works for the long term.

And as for this company you're referring to, if they're basing any of their SEO strategies off "talk" then that's a bit of a worry. I haven't noticed any "major" algo changes recently, other than much more frequent toolbar PR updates.

Depending on what you are wanting to achieve with the seo, IF this company is charging a lot, why not consider getting someone to ensure your onpage factors are in place and then pay someone to get you high PR links for you.

It's just another avenue to consider and could work out a lot cheaper.

You will not be penalized for purchasing paid links, you'll be penalized for selling paid links. No off-site optimization can harm you.
