When you buy a domain from the GoDaddy auctions site, are you forced to use GoDaddy for the registration and whois privacy or is there a way to simply purchase the domain but renew the registration for a year with another company such as Namecheap?

You can renew registration from other servers only after you transfer domain from GoDaddy to other server. For this you have to unlock domain, request Domain Authorization Code (EPP Code) from GoDaddy and provide to Namecheap for complete domain transfer. After that all renewal will be done at Namecheap.

    • Thanks. I bought a domain yesterday and after the bidding had ended, and I went to make the payment for the domain, it automatically added on the registration fee for a year and I couldn't see any way of turning that off.

I found a setting in the GoDaddy account under "Domain Registration Defaults" and it was set to always renew domains automatically. I changed that to manual but I don't know if that refers to auctions.

You can't avoid the 1 year registration fee, but you can transfer the domain over to your preferred registrar after completing the registration. There is a waiting period though.

        • Hmm that's a shame. I like namecheap because they add the domain privacy free but GoDaddy charge about $7 for it heh

You also must wait 60days to be able to unlock your domain making it transferable. You can email them to help this process along though. Also just google 'Godaddy to namecheap'...................................
