    Hi
Directory submissions are not bad. Actually we need to do proper business directories, Which helps in generating the good quality links to the website. Where as low PR Directories will not approve the links.

Everyone has said everything there is to say about the use of web directories in SEO. It's not advisable unless you are submitting to renowned web directories, free or paid.

Yes if you mean the low quality directories a fiverr gig can get you into.

But that doesn't mean their value as a whole is lost. Take dmoz and yahoo directory for example

  • we found we ranked on keywords quicker you need to do the following

Focus on high page rank directories.
Focus on ones with reasonable high alexa rankings ( helps you find quality)
post your listing only in your niche example if you sell electronics stick to electronics
change up your anchor text dont do the same listing cross lots of directories
stay away from crappy looking and poor rank ones some have great pricing for paid ones but will give a pile of crap bank links.

dont do all your link submissions in one day spread them out

I don't know where people are living or listening too.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

How can directory submissions hurt? They don't matter! How can something hurt
      you that doesn't matter?

Does directory submission hurt? Well, does sleeping with your domain name on a
piece of paper under your pillow hurt?

Not helping does not mean hurting.

Directory submission is a waste of time, and maybe that would hurt, as you are
spending your valuable time on useless things.

    Hi,

If you have a local business, than directory submissions will actually help your business as long as you are submitting to good (High PR and High Domain Authority) directories. Even Google indirectly suggests to have your listing on some good quality local directories by displaying reviews on Google Places dashboard from those other directories. Like, if someone is in Australia and have a local business than true local, Womo and yellow pages are the best to register on. It also helps boosting your organic listings and Google places listings if you are registered.

Note - Your business name, address and phone number must be exactly the same on all directories.

The people that are telling you not to submit your site to directories really mean not to submit your site to low quality directories. You should avoid these completely.

If you submit your site to a small number (less than 10?) of quality directories (Yahoo, DMOZ, BOTW, etc.) or quality niche directories that specialize in your niche you will probably not get penalized and the links will help your site. This works great for my sites.
