Hi Everyone,
If I am targeting a relatively obscure keyword that has no other google ads displayed... Why would there be a high minimum bid required for the ad to display?

I thought that the "suggested first page bid" had to do with competing demand for that keyword, and clearly no one else is using it. Does google ever implement some sort of premium on specific words?

Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance!

It's high because Google has no history on that keyword. It also goes by what your ad says and the algo doesn't see anything to give you lower price.

Even if you don't see other advertisers for the keyword, doesn't mean nobody ever used it in the past, or that nobody is using that keyword today. Google will use that past history as well. That could be a clue that past advertisers did not do very well with it.

You have a choice. 1. Forget the keyword, especially if you don't want to pay what is asked 2. Increase the CPC to what is asked. It may go down in a few days. 3. Leave it and you may still get some impressions. If people click, the CPC minimum may be revised lower.

It most likely has to do with your Quality score.

To improve your score use you keyword phrase in your Ad title and/or body.

You landing page should also be optimized around this keyword phrase.

You can check you quality score by going to your ad group and clicking on the keywords table.

Next to each keyword is a status column.

In the status column there is a icon that looks like a comment bubble.

Hover your mouse over the icon and it will show you quality score and tips to improve it.

its more than just the competitors!

Otherwise i could bid on "weather channel" <-- check this keyword and be amazed!

The reason is LIKELY the high search volume - and let me guess you bid on a site name or brand..or anything else which has VERY high search volume.

The higher the search volume for your KW, the more it will "push down" your CTR..and therefore your quality score! This even with keywords which have NO competition AT ALL.

Or: Is it a "normal" keyword but just your landing page not very relevant to the keyword? AGAIN...no ads competing does not automatically guarantee you a low bid i you LP is not relevant to the keyword.

Thank you everyone, for your replies!

Lucid: Thanks for your advice. In many cases the keywords are absolutely pivotal to my offer, so I can't ignore them, but I am being an incredible tight-wad with my bids (.05 cents each). What is weird is the cost of using them seems to be going up each day. Things that were giving impressions fine last week at .05 are now up to .50 cents and higher, so as I revise my ads, I get no impressions to see if my changes are impacting things positively. My total ad impressions were around 8000 when I started and yesterday were down to 130, on many more keywords!

I'll take your advice and raise my bids to like .20 and hope they go down after a little bit.

John and George: Thanks for the info! Many of the quality scores on keywords that I care about are 7/10, and the rest are lower. The lower ones make sense... They were adword suggestions and they are not directly referenced in the text on my landing page.

What is unfortunate is that I can't figure out how to get the 7's any higher... particularly when my landing page is so small. I don't want to ramble all over the place with my text... The page is supposed to be very simple. "I've got cool information and you might be able to try it free if you answer the survey below".

Any suggestions for how many times I should ping a particular keyword?

I'm trying to optimize on keywords like "Materialization", "Invisibility", "Teleportation" and "Levitation"... These are not keywords that I would imagine get ubertraffic. I am working an exceedingly tight niche, but I hope to succeed because I'm the only game in town, so to speak.

In fact, at this point in our discussion, it would probably be beneficial if you guys could take a look at my landing page:

Steven Carl Kelly: Thank you for your kind offer. I'd like to try a few other things first, but if the offer stands I might take you up on it in a day or two!

Thanks everyone, for your help and support.

This marketing stuff is very new to me, but very exciting and I am delighted that you are sharing your insights and suggestions with me.
