Hi

Sorry if this is a stupid question but im trying to get to grips with seo. I have jsut been recommended a tool called Market Samurai for keyword research . Ive personally found it to be very informative -in fact a little too informative, it really provides a hugh amount of information.
Now my question to everyone is what is the single most important metric that you would look at when judging weather a keyword is compettive and how would you know if it high competion medium competion or low competition .

thanks for your support

Lisa

Search for your keyword and look at the top 10 results in Google, then answer the questions below:

    1. How many of those sites have the keyword in their title?
    2. How many of them used the keyword in the anchor text of their backlinks?
    3. How many of them have a PageRank of 3 or higher?
    4. How good is the content published on those sites?
    5. How many of them are using 1+ year old domain names?

The higher the number of sites on the first page having everything mentioned in the above questions, the higher the keyword competition.

To find out the difficulty for any keyword quickly and effortlessly, use a keyword tool like Long Tail Pro or buy a MOZ subscription so you can use their keyword difficulty tool.

Be careful, the competition stated in Keyword Planner is NOT for SEO. That's the competition happening between Google Ads.

Good keyword research can be an art form and is a skill that takes time to learn. There are many different metrics that should be analyzed. From my experience I also prefer to use Long Tail Pro over Market Samurai. Its simple to use, can run multiple keywords at once and is fast. If you go for the platinum version Long Tail Pro will provide you a single Keyword Competitiveness score.

This can be a good guide, but you should also look at all the data as well.

In a real basic way using the Page Authority (PA) metric from Moz I would say:

      PA <25 - low competition
      PA >25-<50 medium competition
      PA >50 high competition

You can also replace PA by KC (Keyword Competition) from Longtail Pro or use the keyword analysis metric from Moz.com (using their paid subscription). However you have to take the outcome from Moz with a grain of salt as they give too much value to their DA (Domain Authority) metric and that's simply not justified.

Yeah Market Samurai is NOT good for keyword research. Long Tail Pro is better. But anyways, Glenn at Viper Chill made a great guide to KW research: Keyword Research: The Ultimate Guide

Below 100 is low competition, Above 100 is medium competition.. Above 1000 is high competition.
