You SHOULD do this as often as possible. Of course most of the time I consider the links I send out permanent, because once a post is written it will probably hand around for months / years to come. It is nothing bad and raises your credibility if you use sources from a variety places about your niche additionally helping others out giving them a backlink which won't harm you at all.

So to answer your question: very often.

Sure, if you want people leaving your site and giving others a boost.

That's not me, and I can't fathom why anyone would except in rare cases.
Like being paid or having a page that cries out for answering a question with
a resource. If that's what you are doing, so be it. But for me, I am looking to
make money off of people. Not send them elsewhere.

I can't imagine many of you have a real business or treat your online endeavors
      as such.

Can you imagine walmart, having a signs all around the store directing them
to try shopping at target? Funny thing, I'll bet some of you can actually imagine
that as a good business practice!

I actually just answered this a little more in depth Here

But to sum it up, YES link out, YES do it whenever possible, but make sure it is relevant. Do not just do it to do it.

I believe most of us (myself included) link out at least once in every blog post. If it's not EVERY single one, it's the majority of them.

Link out if you REALY have to, SEO or not. If the link is relevant and it makes sense to link then do it. Do not just link for the sake of having a link. Most importantly, if you do link, make sure it opens in a new tab so you do not lose the visitor completely.

personally I do not link unless I really REALLY have to.

Counting things just to have a number isn't SEO.

I rarely link out except for my affiliate links. I suppose it depends on what you're doing with your website. I would only link if someone had a really good article that made really good sense within my post.

Being active on search engines is very important. Actually that keeps the system up. And the gold word that I want to underscore is that content is the foundation to a solid natural optimization. Social signals and distribution is the purpose of the Link Building long term strategy. Flawless content and link building strategies is the key and solution that anyone can do. Sharing your content is what all about. Exposing it on the right places will bring the right traffic all the time.

  • I do it twice a month but do note two things about linking
    a) The link must be DoFollow
    b) The link must be relevant to your niche
