Google is not working like it did 2 years ago. Your site needs to meet some quality metrics before your links will even make a difference.. your links need to meet some quality metrics before they will make a difference and the content around your links needs to meet certain quality signals now... plus your links to your links to your links needs to have quality signals.. and the links to those links too... and then if your site is a pile Google will dump it...

I agree with Asuwa, i.e. to build dofollow backlinks at top ranking sites and ensure your content is unique at every place.

"but links are the #1 factor in rankings" - that actually is only partially true. Some context, you have classes of business: Micro Enterprise <$3mil revenue/yr & <10employees; Small Enterprise $3-14mil revenue; Medium Enterprise $14-70mil revenue; Large Enterprise $70mil+.

Here 99% will be working in the Micro level, and a splattering of Small Enterprise experience (Business SEO). The thing is, at Medium & Large Enterprise levels they do it very differently (Technical SEO), it is the reason they have 5-10:1 revenue:effort compared to Micro which used to be 1:1 and now is more like 1:2.

We know this because we saw the results of their test sites using Magento (Affiliate & eCommerce) & WordPress (Affiliate) - first page ranking next to Google in a few weeks – but it used a hosting architecture that only the Medium & Large Enterprise companies use. So therein lies the problem, at Micro levels there is very little understanding of how the big guys roll, Google changed over to tech seo around 2010/11, it takes around 3yrs to filter down the mainstream. It is like water running out of a plughole, the bigger the hole (your site, sector, pricing, content quality, backlinks) the quicker your ranking and indexing flows out – or never holds water in the first place.

The principle is to stem the flow until you figure something else out, but as time goes by a new hole (think damn) will spring a leak and you only have so many fingers, thumbs and toes and only so much range to plug them. It is the case now of the fat tails, they will look like they work until it goes bang. Personally we never found a satisfactory medium to long term way to buy backlinks, the real trick is to get them to come to you organically but that is pretty difficult – so we took a completely different approach.

That’s hard to do with content sites, you need the content and everyone just helps themselves to it – ecommerce is tough due to the increasing fraud issues. As we said in other places, it is moving to large enterprise ‘look’ (which is the proud enough statement) or a very selected niche – that seems to be the place to be.

Buying links can work (not something we do), but as with everything it is about the quality – they can easily do more harm than good if you get the wrong ones.

That's the thing, we don't, we let them come in organically by making the site look like something a millionaire ceo would like, still puts a smile on our face that quote, excellent. The way you want to do it - there are many other people more experienced than us that will advise on the techniques - the only thing to remember is that it is artistic - no fixed rules - so what works for one will destroy the next person.

You need to do this, have a snowball and make it turn in to an avalanche. The problem is getting the first snowball to run - PRWeb with their high profile press releases are pretty good - but you need to cross reference it all. The backlinks are effectively there to trick Google in to pushing your content higher in the rankings, it doesn't mean anyone will buy anything from you - and Google changed the rules anyway to dillute these. People are pretty smart when it comes to spending money, if it smells wrong they walk away.

So it all depends what you want, Google rankings -or- build visitor trust so they buy, doing both is stupidly difficult. We have some weird things we do, one example is we build affiliate sites and cross link the new shops products in to them so they are listed next to the top retailers (trust) - but it is a pain to build a high quality affiliate site with auto-loading (fortunately we have some special tools that do it for us).

We probably didn't explain ourselves very well, let's try again. We use technical methods, an example is we build affiliate sites with top retailers and put the core site products there as well, we use complex autoloading tools to clean and map the data with data enrichment derived from the tools companies like Walmart use. We also use special hosting derived from the same hosting that companies like Saks or Shopstyle use, so we get technical seo ranking up with the enterprises minimising business effort.

All the suggestions will be business based, buying or building links and so on, we don't do that, we don't like clicking, and we don't like the lack of clarity in the links heritage. It only takes one bad apple to bring down the house of cards - that would keep us awake at night.

Both methods work, but we prefer to do other things, technical methods allow us to sit outside having a pizza like last night and let the computer do all the work for us - or write very nice press releases to post. It's just the way we do it - but like in Oceans Eleven we are the ones looking at the pretty girl instead of watching the hotel be demolished - they both have the same effect in the end - one takes huge amounts of upfront work with zero initial return and the other is continuous day to day work.
