Hey all,
So I have a website targeting an area in the United States, but I have it hosted with a company in England. How much will this affect me in terms of SEO? Do I need to go ahead and change it? the speed is just fine.
Thanks

Google has servers in most countries so odds are they'll favor host in the same country each Google server is located.

Why would I serve a page hosted in Siberia to traffic in Chicago, IL (US) when there's already thousands of other sites that are in the same GEO location as Chicago & can be accessed faster from a Google server in the Chicago area, or even anyplace else in the US?

The whole point of Google having servers all over the world is to boost page loading times for traffic.

A ccTLD is also going to play a role in the SERPs (language).

You might try the Firefox SEO Global extension.

Yes, you have to change the hosting for better results but it's not necessary at all!
imagine every time you target a foriegn niche like malaysian or indian you have to change the hosting to indian or malaysian hosting? of course not!

  • If you want to rank well in the USA, it is best that you're hosting in the USA! And so on ...

    It doesn't matter.

My site's traffic is mainly from USA and i have hosted my site on servers in Netherlands, Sweden and elsewhere in Europe as well as in US and that didn't change my target demographics. Google decides your demographics based on your TLD and from you receive your backlinks.

If you a .de domain then doesn't matter if you are hosted in USA, your site will be favored more for german traffic. It makes sense, what has hosting to do with rankings...i prefer hosting in Europe because of how fast and cheap the servers there are versus in US. If it changed anything with my rankings, i would be very pissed but gladly it doesn't.

There is also the issue of mirrors, most major sites use CDNs and mirrored copy of their sites and not all of them are located in the same location or country, if google cared where your site was hosted then which region would be favored in such a case ? Proof google doesn't.

Lot of good points above. And really when you can set your target country in WMT I doubt your server's IP is going to over-ride that. Google knows some people use cheap hosting that isn't US based, no way they penalize you that dramatically just based on server location. Just my opinion of course.
