Site got punished after a 301 redirect

Tried to redirect my old site to new using 301 redirect .... a few weeks later google has dropped almost all keywords to 200+ ranking. Total disaster.

Bought a new domain, did the redirect and now this happened. Anyone know why and if this is temporary because of the new domain name registered?

Did you 301 everything to the homepage of the new site or do a 301 for each individual page to the new corresponding age?

The "301 redirect trick" does not work anymore. If the site your 301ing from is penalized, the penalty will pass to.

      Your contradicting yourself.

You say the 301 doesn't work but at the same time you say the 301 passes a penalty from another domain that has a penalty. If a penalty can be passed from one domain to another then obviously the same is true for 2 domains that don't have any penalties.

Anyways... a 301 will pass links to another domain/page.

      @OP:
      • Did the domain already have a penalty?
      • Is the domain link profile spammy?
      • Are the Wayback page/s spammy?
      • Did you do any domain resarch?

And what was your reason behind the redirect? Just bought a new domain and liked the name better? Was the old site penalized?

301 redirection is okay as long as you redirect pages to relevant pages.

This quick tutorial will teach you how to perform an Apache ht access 301 redirect in several different scenarios...no matter what your situation is!

Whether you want to delete or consolidate web pages, it's always best to pass all of their search engine merit over to another existing page, to salvage visits, page rank and old back links. This is what a 301 redirect will do for you!
    Caution!
you really want to make sure you’ve gotten everything done correctly before testing it out. I recommend you take the following precautions before trying them out.

The problem is simple. People misunderstand what a 301 actually was designed
for, and, for some reason they keep crashing and burning domains. Why?

      Stop the insanity.

If the old domain doesn't have any ranking issues, the fault may lie in the new domain. Analyse the link profile of the new domain and it's history on archive.org to make sure it isn't a domain that was previously used for spammy activities, penalized, and then dropped.

If you redirected a non-penalized domain to a new, never registered domain name (are you positive?), it's because there's a delay in how the link juice carries over. It's not an instant thing. Further, 301's devalue link juice to the same degree as a backlink from one page to the next (Cutts said this himself, around 15% or so). So don't do anything dramatic, over time the rankings should come back but don't expect everything to be identical.

You have a .ca domain now, what country SERP are you trying to rank? Was you ranking in US or Canada SERPs before the 301s? Maybe Google is confused because you've basically overhauled every single link. I guess you've tested every single link you did a 301 on & made sure there's no 404s.

BTW, this thread title is a bit dramatic considering you brought on the SERP drop. There's always a possibility of dropping rank when messing with anything related to ranked page URLs. Personally I would've done the mass 301 in small chunks, a few lower traffic keywords first gradually moving into the higher traffic ranked pages If all goes well.

            Just a thought here,

I take it you have the old site plugged into Google WMT?

If so, go into the old site control panel,
Go to the remove urls from index tab,
Put this remove request in /*

This will remove the old site entirely from the index, and forces google to ping your site. Meaning they will recrawl the old urls and find they are now redirected, passing on the power of the old site accordingly.

After you have removed the old site entirely give it at least 24 hours before you see changes starting to take effect.

This is why 301's should not just be done without thinking through the potential problems.

At the end of the day 301'ng isn't recommended in most situations.
