Hi, thanks for taking the time to read my post. This may sound like a silly question but here goes. If for example. I made a site about beer and my main domain was beer.com and I had a load of pages beer.com/stella, beer.com/fosters. If I get alot of back links to my pages but not my main domain page. Would it help my main page get up the page rankings or each individual page only? Thanks in advance for any help

Links to your individual pages will increase your Domain Authority, which only helps your main page rank higher. Also, if you have links to your home page on those subpages (most sites do, at least in the form of a navigation link, etc.), then some of that link "juice" from each page will be funneled back to your home page.

In fact, links to subpages are a pretty natural signal, and too many home page only links can send the signal that your actual content pages aren't of high quality.

In other words, go for it!

Thanks for the reply RS3RS. Another question I forgot to add is. Do I choose keywords for my main domain only or different keywords for each page? Again for example. I would want beer, liquor, drink etc. But I would want each of the brand names for my individual pages.
Also since search engines dont like thin content. Would it be a good idea to get a seperate domain for each "brand" for example? Then having a seperate domain which would have been my home page linking to the other sites?

Last question, I promise! Would it be better to have links and blogs from a different domain than the one you are linking to? Basically would google penalise you slightly for having links and blogs on the same domain instead of a different domain? Thanks again

A single page can only target so many keywords, and it can only target a couple of them WELL (typically these are the keywords in the page title). If you try to do too much with one page, your targeting will be too diluted and your rankings will drop across the board.

In other words, you'll want to have an individual page to target each primary keyword phrase. You can add closely-related keywords to those same pages, but just keep it natural. Google has gotten GREAT at detecting unnatural targeting / keyword stuffing, so keep in mind what your users would view as natural and proceed accordingly.

Your home page should just target the most important keywords that relate to the site itself. For example, your page title might be "XYZ.com: Beer, Wine, and Liquor Reviews" to target the 3 phrases "beer reviews", "wine reviews", and "liquor reviews". That's about as far as you'd want to push it.

Also beware of keyword "cannibalization". Each page should be targeted towards its own keyword topic. Try not to confuse the search engines with multiple pages that fit a specific query.

I would strongly recommend consolidating this to a single domain. Remember, your combined inbound links all help build the authority of that page's domain. If you spread this across multiple domains, you end up with a bunch of weaker sites. Sticking to a single, stronger domain will help build authority status in the eyes of the search engines.

One site also builds increased brand recognition among users who find your site useful, and provides more content to hook those users in. If I look up information on Blue Moon, and see your site has a ton of pages with helpful information about my other favorite brands of beer, I'll be more likely to remember it and come back later (and recommend it to others).

A little unsure of what you're asking: -- if you mean having inbound links to your site from other websites who YOU link to, or if you're still referring to splitting your site up among multiple domains.

If the former, I advise trying to minimize "trading links" with other websites (even if you don't specifically intend to do so). Google can still view this as reciprocal linking, and can devalue the authority of those links accordingly. If it happens naturally, it's okay in moderation -- but avoid it as a link strategy.

If you're just talking about keeping all of your own content / blog posts on the same domain, Google won't penalize you for that. In fact, they'll reward you, as it helps them view your site as a larger authority on the beer topic (or whatever the focus might be).

Hope that helps. Ask any more questions if you want, and feel free to clarify if I didn't fully understand your questions.

Best of luck with the site!

You can use your other pages to capture long tail traffic by optimizing them for long tail keywords and use your homepage to target the keywords with the highest competition.

No, don't get a separate domain for each brand. Instead, use parent pages or categories to sort your content by brand.

Google won't penalise you. In fact, it's the best approach because it keeps your domain authority and link juice within one domain instead of dividing it among several domains, which means better rankings for any content you publish.

Hope this answers your questions conclusively.

I do have a quick question on the SEO to be done for foreign company that wants to target local clients. As I am thinking if I do all the off-line SEO and direct traffic to that foreign website is the only way to go as I do not have access to their web admin.
On the other hand would it be better if I build a website with similar industry / services and link it to that principal website.
Please give your opinions unreservedly. Thank you in advance.

To bump your main page, you also should pass internal links to main page, through this, the link authority would pass on.

1 Domain should be fine. And in case you'd like to experiment with new things, you could try with a different domain first (not your main money site).

And if you just want to test backlinks, you can do it against Video sites first (youtube for example), so you minimize risks.
