Hi,
I just had a question on backlinking and was hoping someone could answer it.

It is often said that posting your comments on a high PR "no-follow" site, gets you the PR juice(I hope I am right with that term).

My question is how relevant the high PR site should be to your niche. For example if I am in the weight loss niche, should I only aim to get quality backlinks from Health bolgs/weight loss blogs?

If I get a backlink from a high PR blog which is not relevant to weight loss,is it not worth it?I mean will google not consider as a good backlink?
Just starting on backlinking and I dont really want to waste much time doing the wrong things.
Hope someone can advice.
Thanks,
Pinky

Both are correct. Remember, there are no hard/fast rules for web marketing. Its all trial and error which converts into experience. If you're a veteran in this field then you must have the answer yourself. but....

No you don't get any link juice for "no followed" links. Better to spend some time and look for "do follow" - "relevant" sites.

No, It will be considered as a backlink, If it hast high PR that is a real gift, Goolge loves it... However, try to get the mixture of ONTOPIC + OFFTOPIC.... That will be great.....
If you can get ONTOPIC HIGH PR link that is great, But It is very hard to get it.

      Hi Pinks,

Don't concern yourself with PR or no-follow, those are false herrings, what matters is relevant traffic. PR is not a reliable indicator of traffic and does not measure relevance. So what, if you have a bunch of links from pages with little traffic and none of it relevant, those kind of backlinks are virtually worthless.

If a page has lots of relevant traffic and you get a link there that uses relevant and enticing anchor text, you can expect plenty of highly targeted traffic from that link. And don't worry, your bank will cash checks from sales generated by no-follow links just as easily as any other link.

Avoid the path of PR manipulation as the payoff is not worth it.

Spot on dburk! Good to hear some sound advice. Don't fret over PR. I have built PR7 pages that make no money. You don't have to go through that because you can learn more here in one day than I learnt by trial and error in 1 year.

Some really nice pieces of advice while taking the pressue off to make backlinks from high PR sites. Seriously, I have noticed that too, getting a backlink from high PR site does close-to-nothing benefit to the site. Whereas if you get targetted traffic, you will get authority in your niche and people will automatically mention you.

You are correct but only to an extent. If you get a few irrelevant links then that is good for nothing. However, a serious bunch of good backlinks (even if irrelevant) can move your search engine rankings to the top. I have started experiencing this and that is awesome. Relevant links do get your authority stamped faster, but irrelevant links also have non-zero value. So if it is tough to get relevant link then get and irrelevant link (which must be high PR do follow in nature) - it pays if you can build a wealth of such links.

Relevant links are key... higher PR links are better than lower PR links - but both work! Google is similar to a popularity contest (e.g. American Idol) - the more "relevant and popular" links will increase your Google juice.
