Can I Outrank Amazon, Walmart, Wikihow, etc...

I have a few keywords for products that have between 1500-5000 searches. And in some the top 3-4 results are big ecommerce websites like those mentioned in the title. Is that a good thing, or is that a bad thing?

The pages themselves have low PR, low numbers of backlinks and not well on-page SEO optimized. Yet I find a place or two which say that outranking eCommerce websites is almost impossible. Any thoughts?

Yes, but you'd have to be pretty authoritative in order to do so. I've had some success tacking on 1,000+ words of content for ecommerce pages I really want to rank for.

    TopTenREVIEWS Expert Product Reviews

They do a lot of different things on their product/comparison pages to build them out and add value. I'd suggest looking into those.

I prefer going for lower search volume longer tail keywords where there are many heavy hitter ecommerce sites. There are many to choose from.

I find it easier to generate more content than taking a chance ranking more competitive keywords.

With long tail the top ranking pages are there by default so it can be very easy to take top spots with decent content and some social media promotion.

I am talking about KWs between 1,500-6000 exact search volume. But even in the low numbers there are Amazon results.

Also, most guides and reports I've read say that those wiki-style websites, answer websites, and so on, are easy to outrank. Thoughts on that?

Your missing out on the reason those big box retail sites rank their typical internal pages. They don't have a single page targeting one keyword, they have hundreds/thousands of relevant internal pages cross promoting similar products all targeting same/similar keywords (AKA internal links). Now look at the external link profiles for each of the internal supporting pages.

The thousand word theory is silly, as always. If you could simply blast loads of text to rank a page then why not have 10 million words? Silly right?

Yukon is right about the strength of the internal links from inside these high authority domains as to why they rank well with little external incoming links.

You could get it ranking up there by blasting links at it, but you won't stay there for long unless you have the site authority to back it up, and that only comes with time, a lot of content, a lot of natural links, citations, social, etc....

Google gives preferential treatmemt to those large ecommerce sites in the SERPs so beating them for a keyword that triggers results from their sites is harder than beating other normal sites for other keywords.

Your website needs a fairly good amount of authority to beat such sites in Google. You can build that authority by buying high PR blog posts and text links (if it is a churn and burn sites).

Of course it is possible, but so difficulty because you have very high-profiled competitors against your selected keywords. You have to work in a long run and working consistently you can achieve results after a long time. This tasks would not be easy, but also i want to say it is not impossible, can be achieved with full determination and hardworking. Set up a strategy and work on a single strategy consistently instead of many.
