There has been some talk on this forum where some have speculated that Google SERP is now somewhat dependant on social media

Can any of the vets please give me some insight into this?

There's nothing social about SEO. Most SEO I know, are a obsessive compulsive breed. Who work into the late hours. Very "Anti" social indeed. As you can see, the two don't mix at all.

Thank you for your reply. That means social media does not affect the ranking in Google. I really don't know what to do now. Do I have to put a backlink in a forum signature to rank in Google?

I believe Social media is more affect nowadays. And even it become important part to rank....

You can put backlink in forum signature, but this kind of backlinks are not good, small value.

It really depends on other factors, in my experience. Facebook links will do virtually nothing, and Twitter sets mostly all links to nofollow. The only social strategy I found that works at all takes quite a bit of work. You need to essentially create an entire SEO campaign to look like the links are viral, which usually means you need to create numerous wordpress blogs, social media profiles, youtube profiles, blogger pages, etc and then create a funnel effect. This would mean that for example, you want to rank a URL... So you then create a few profiles for sister blogs... Then you write little articles on a similar topic on those blogs around your chosen niche. You then place some deeplinks from those articles into your main URL (I choose to do deeper linking to give some variety, makes it look more legit than pointing tons of links to your root URL). Then you create some social profiles, add some links there and share them from within. Then you create a few profiles on tumblr.com, reddit, etc and share your sister blog links there, as well as a few from within your main site.

It is a long process indeed, but, it makes the linking look less spammy. From a search engines perspective, if a site has a ton of links to the main url, it is not nearly as natural as having internal links to other relevant pages. the only way to build authority, in my opinion, is to make it look as natural as possible. It can be a real pain, though, especially when you have to continually manage all of those smaller blog sites and articles.

haha that's funny but I do not agree on the "anti-social" thing ahaha

Anyway, back on the query, though Kevin has a point.

Social media doesn't affect SEO directly but social media can be effective on contributing traffic to a certain site and increase site's online presence. And the myth that people should not believe is that you can get a link juice from social media sites, because that is a big 'no-no'. Why? If social media sites allowed to pass link juice then more and more people will just take advantage of the opportunity.

      I hope it make sense

I have a hunch it does, but no evidence. I only build links by posting to my social accounts and my content is shared quite a bit yet I generate quite a bit of organic search traffic.

That said, I have a decent amount of content so it's quite a bit of long tail. I doubt social alone will rank for any competitive keywords.

I have been working my butt off by creating a Twitter, Instagram & even a LinkedIn account (I already had FB & Pinterest). BUT my traffic sources have not shown Instagram & Twitter yet... but I hear they work amazing for other shops.

Social media is an intrinsic part of SEO. If your post is an excellent one it can go viral and there is a chance that some people might be tempted to visit your website. In this way it can generate traffic, though indirectly.

Social media is pretty effective. As per search engine ranking factors published on Moz, social signals have a major role to play in search results.

Could you elaborate more on how for example, sharing a link on FB created "Organic search" traffic? Organic meaning from a Google search query and not a click through from FB.

That's called "Marketing", it's got nothing to do with "Search Engine Optimization".

Exactly, "Social media marketing". It's not SEO. Thanks

Can you link me to your source on that?

What a random "guest poster" declares on a "random" SEO blog, is hardly proof of anything.

The causation of an increased social presence is a correlation of web presence.

      In easier words.

The more traffic your site gets, the more likely the chance of social sharing. But the social sharing does not come before the ranking.

Social media can help improve your rankings. If your content gets shared by many people it will rank better.

The social media websites are important when it comes to driving traffic to your website. However, for getting the best results, it is important to post updates on a regular basis.

As a sales channel social media generates 1-2% of the traffic and is more or less useless, organic - ppc - email control ~60. As for traffic, social media just tells bots there is something interesting, if they come an look and find an average site - which 95% are unfortunately - they will leave just as quickly. The same goes for visitors - if they don't trust the site they will leave just as quickly. That is all there is to it.
