Besides the money aspect of google maki money on adwords, anyone think google could be trying to figure out how to avoid negative seo attacks on websites?

I have a feeling this could be part of the penguin delay if there is a technical reason to it.

I don't think Google cares about how much SEOs neg-SEO each other. In fact, it's favorable to Google as some people might give up on SEO and switch to Adwords.

Ironically some small businesses might be inclined to spend more on adwords if they had more income comnig in from their website.

For example if a site is ranking in one niche and they have other parts of their site that don't rank, with extra money they may be inclined to advertise non ranking areas of their site. I think without income from a website for a small business that could be the opposite. Also corporations have the most money to spend on that.

Who said there was a delay in the update? There is no schedule for Penguin updates.

If not delay then reasoning behind a longer wait than usual between updates.

      Who says there has been?

Specifically there is an update that runs on the 9th-11th of virtually every month that is:
      - directly link related, particularly low quality pbn's and linkspam
      - granular to a page level
      - keyword specific (IE punished pages may still rank for a couple random terms)

The more I've looked at it, it would appear there is an antispam update that occurs regularly.

Google is under no commitment to announce this, as or in part of a penguin update. The truth is that the last announced penguin update was aimed at being as granular as this regular update is.

Google could have retired the penguin 'index push' style update and never said a word. This wouldn't surprise me. We (assumption that -WE- do?) already understand that they can change the index on the fly without a complete rebuild, so why not regularly skip the rebuild, much like what has been done with Panda?
