What's the ideal way of using h tags for SEO?

I always have 1 h1 tag on the page and maximum 2 h2 tags. However, a lot of wordpress templates come with h3 tags as headings in the sidebar e.g. "Latest posts", etc.

Would you recommend removing these and using font sizes instead, or how would you handle it? For example one of my websites has 32 h3 tags, all from the sidebar, footer and post titles.

What h tag/ size do you use for post titles on the homepage?

H1 tags for the title and H2 tags for subtopics throughout the page.

Yes, but on a blog home page, will you have the title of the site in h1 and the title of the individual posts in h2?

The number of header tags on your site or pages doesn't matter as long as you aren't using them for spamming. The title of my posts are usually h1 tags, and I use h2 and h3 tags within the body of my posts.

We have 6 h tags. It's nothing but the size of text. Always title will be highlighted so we are using the large size H1 and for subheading H2. You can also use H3 for for subheading 1, 2, ...and also for the body of the text. It's all about how you want your page to be.

I use H1 tag for post title on the homepage. If post includes sub-heading then use H2. There are H1 to H6 tags but only H1 and H2 is sufficient.

Heading tags, as their name suggests, are used to differentiate the heading of a page from the rest of the content. These tags are also known to webmasters as HTML header tags, head tags, heading tags and SEO header tags.
For example, if your site is introduced with a heading in h1, and a sub-heading in h3, the hierarchy will be broken, meaning the heading structure is not SEO-friendly. The coding should be something like what is shown below:

    <h1>Main Heading</h1>
    <h2>Secondary Heading 1</h2>
<h3>Sub-section of the secondary heading 1</h3>
    <h2>Secondary Heading 2</h2>
<h3>Sub-section of the secondary heading 2</h3>

I use h1 thru h6 to prioritize the copy on my product pages for google/search engines. It really doesn't matter about "headlines" or font size, think about the most important info you have on your page that you have keywords in or want to be sure has weight with search engines. Then wrap those sections in h tags in order of h1 = most important to h6 = least important. Leave h tags off of the common stuff or items that repeat on various pages (in my case, delivery info).

You can apply this principle to any webpage.

Do not over stuff heading tags in page . If they really deserve existance according to reading ease and flow then only create. But remember only single h1 tag should use in a page but you can use multiple h2,h3,h4..... tags

You must use 1 H1 tag in a page according to SEO perspective. Apart from a H1 you can implement multiple H2 & H3 tags..

You must need h1 and at least 3 h2 what all of them must include your focus keywords. But you need more things to make sure you do the good job on on-page seo. You can install and use plugin "Wordpress SEO by Yoast", it will show you how many score you get for your article and what need to fix.

Ok one thing you should note is that every page should have an H1 tag, ideally this will be the first tag used, generally have your main target keyword or phrase within that tag.

You can use h2,h3,h4 etc on your site. However, if you are optimising to the letter of recommendations then the H tags should always flow.
    for instance you could have:
    H1
    H2
    H2
    H3
    H4

But You should not have them as
    H1
    H2
    H4
    H3

etc etc. Just make sure they are in order. In all honesty really the H1 is the most important but I have seen pages rank that have more than 1 H1 within them. Google will be more concerned that the content within the page is answering the searchers query rather than dwelling on the power of titles.

You need to customize the theme if heading tag is spammed in it. H1 goes for the main keyword (topic heading) and h2 goes for the sub headings.

The H1 tag is the most important heading because it's the highest level tag that shows what your specific page is about. Search engines generally give this tag more weight over other headings, so it usually improves your search engine ranking when you use it correctly and in conjunction with other onsite SEO techniques.

And H2, H3, H4, etc Headings are Important but not as important to the search engines as your H1 tag. Unlike the H1 tag, you may have multiple H2, H3, H4, H5, and H6 sub-headings. Think of these sub-headings as ways of organizing the content on your page for your readers more than for the search engines. These headings should also contain important keywords and help organize your content into sections, so readers can scan your page and decide if it's something they're interested in reading.

There is an actual written guide by a billion dollar company, Google. You could just take their advise, or fish around this forum for something you're not going to believe or just question for hours. Just go to the best source man, the guide by the search engine you're trying to rank in.

Maybe, but Google won't tell you how to use <h> tags besides basic stuff that can be found on web design sites.

They also won't tell you things like <h> tags can be used to create multiple SERP titles for a single page.
