I have observed some sites url starts with www. and some with http.

What is the difference between the two & which one is better.

Each one is seen as a different domain to search engines, as stupid as that sounds.

Neither is "better". They are just different. You should only use one, doesn't matter which, but then be consistent in using it. You should identify your preferred version of the site in Webmaster Tools.

You should also make sure your site has a 301 redirect to the preferred version. Visitors should not be able to access both the WWW and non-WWW versions.

It's two different domains. Google see it as 2 website. You can get duplicate content if don't config it.

If you use wordpress, don't need to worry too much about it.

All websites start with http, but Google doesn't display it in it's search results except for secure sites (https). www and non-www sites are the same, but www looks more professional.

I think you're confused considering all URLs use http regardless If the use www or not.
