Geo targeting question

How exactly does geo targeting for seo work?

Do you simply just use "term + location" as keywords through article and optimize for them?

or do you have to embed a google map that targets the area?

For example you look for a local plumber in your home town and type in "plumber" usually local places results will show up along side other results. Do your geo targeted key word pages also show up as well or do you need map embedded or some other software?

Thanks in advance

Can any experienced person with SEO answer this question for me? I asked the same thing yesterday with no luck. The info I am finding online is not 100% descriptive.

Geo targeting means targeting a specific location in the world where you'd like your site to rank. You can geo-target your site to a specific region through your Google webmaster tools account. Geo-targeting is however an ambiguous term and might mean something else depending on how it's used.

You can geo target through web master tools? I didn't know that, keep in mind I'm not talking about ppc or anything. I'm strictly talking about localized results and how to use geo targeting to show up for certain towns + keyword.

Use a domain name with an extension of the country you will target, add the major towns you will target in title and description if possible. Finally, use GWT GEO target. GWT Geo target has nothing to do with PPC or anything else, it is a free feature that you can use to target locally.

But if you use GWT GEO target, then expect you ranking to drop globally and increase locally, so only use it if you only care about the local ranking.

Lucky, quick question, is this a wordpress plug in your referring to? Also I am trying to rank a local service based company that operates in multiple towns in a large area, so if global rankings drop I really don't mind as long as my local shoots up above the fold and I can be seen.

        Hi there

I have used Geo tags on my websites for improving localized ranking. Just used Geo tag generator tool to create Geo tags of particular locations and added it before closing </head>tag.

Then add your business in Google places and maps. Don't forget to add your exact address on website. These are some simple techniques which i have used and succeeded as well. I hope this will help you too.

This the tool which i have used for that Geo tag generator . Just enter your address in the box, you will be provided with a html code (geo tag) copy that code and paste it to your web pages.

        Thanks

Geo tagging means tagging the person were we are or to show this is the place right now, i think there is no need to use the software

Oh ya gwt = google web master tools sorry I'm 1st year rookie complete noob haha. Anyways is there any google maps I should embed in each town page or should I just focus on the keyword + town and variations of it and follow yoast seo make sure I got all green lights n my page is following proper guidelines.

I see some companies using fake addresses in each city to list on the page along with a map? is this a spammy tactic that will eventually get the google hammer?

If you can't find a good domain such as " plumbersinohio.com' , you could also use the keywords in title page.

It's a good idea to embed a Google map with the GEO information of the business as long as it's not a service based business, Keep in mind if you are a service based business your address should be hidden and you shouldn't have a map showing customers how to get to a business that isn't setup to assist customers at the store front.
