I have read a lot on keyword research. But I would like a basic rundown of proper keyword research. I don't think it would be a good idea to just pick the top searched for terms, and I don't know if the idea of searches compared to competition is the best way to pick either.

Could I please ask for a basic education on how to do keyword research and pick the best words? Also, how should those words be used in the webpages and links?

The top searched for terms are often keywords that would make you millions if ranked in the top of Google for. Trying to rank for "payday loans" with white hat SEO is going to be outside of all but the richest and best SEOs skill sets and budget level. Even then there are no guarantees.

Not to mention, it's probably out of reach for all but the very best blackhat guys as well.

It's a much more logical approach to find longer-tail keywords that have clear commercial intent with less traffic than a broader higher traffic keyword.

    For example,
"Super Fancy Blue Widget Reviews" with 5,000 searches is often more profitable than
"Blue Widget" with 40,000 local searches a month

because with "Super Fancy Blue Widget Reviews" the user is already further along in the process that begins with researching a product, and ends with making a purchase.

With the Google Payday loan 2.0/3.0 algorithm update which targeted spammy Payday loan type sites and spammy queries, is it really even possible to rank for 'payday loan' or anything similar? I don't think so at this point, unless there is such a thing as a reputable payday loan. But that sounds like a contradiction.
