link structure & juice

hi guys,

just trying to fully grip the concept of link juice as I keep optimizing my Amazon site. Here's my scenario:

Home Page has links to product 1, product 2 and product 3.

All 3 product pages have a link at the bottom that points them back to the home page. (i.e. "click to go back to home page")

Now if I'm building all my backlinks to the home page it would send juice onward to all 3 product pages. But what if I'm building backlinks directly to the product pages as well? Does that in turn pass link juice back to the home page?

If so, would the home page take that link juice and repass it back to those pages? Almost like a circle? or is just a single direction type of distribution?

Thanks and hope this question isn't too confusing!

The search engine bots will keep following the links in a circle and this will make for an effective flow of link juice. It's called siloing.

No? A silo structure is made to keep everything hyper targeted - in such a way that Amazon does. Amazon will only link to very specific categories from broad categories.

      E.G. TV > LCD TV > 55"-60" TV's

The homepage will only link to "TV".

To OP... If it's a small site, don't worry too much about it. I have some parts of my Amazon sites silo structured, but I don't fuss over it at all. For example:

      www.foodprocessor.com
      www.foodprocessor.com/recipes/ (linked in navbar sitewide)
www.foodprocessor.com/recipes/smoothie1 (only linked to from recipes page)
      Signature

Just got back from a #BrightonSEO. I was given room 404 in the hotel I stayed at. Couldn’t find it anywhere!

Ive heard of silo, but I don't think it's something I'm trying to do.

But as far as my site is set up, its' slighty different from your example..

        mine looks like this:

        foodprocessor.com
        foodprocessor.com/recipes
        foodprocessor.com/chocolatepie instead of recipes/chocolatpie

as you can see I don't have chocolatepie filed under foodprocessor.com/recipes. But here's the catch. I do have a link to chocolate pie on the recipe page so that it's still connected. I just don't have it categorized as such in the actual url.

Is this a big no no?

If you're linking to the recipe from the homepage, then there's no point. A silo structure is used to sculpt pagerank and keep categories and sub-categories hyper relevant to one another. By using the "recipes/chocolatepie" suffix, you're telling Google that the chocolate pie is relevant to recipes.

Google often finds it hard to find relevancy between pages, and that's why it's easy to adapt a silo structure. Just look at toptenreviews and how they silo structure their reviews. They don't want food processor reviews associated with exercise bike reviews - because of their lack of relevance.

I'd suggest Googling it, there's probably somebody who can explain it far better in a full post than what I'm trying to get it. If it's for an affiliate site with 20-30 pages total, then you don't have to waste time on it. But it's handy to know, as I'm sure you'll work on bigger sites in the future.

Silo seems the way to go!

Are blogging platforms good for this? I'm currently using Yola for sake of time management, but I think I have some limits on how I can do subcategories to those categories URL wise. I think I've found some wordpress plugins and will probably move my site and content there unless I can find a way around it!
