I have a few questions some may be able to help me with.

I am making a new website for my brother. Local service business. (not that it matters)

I am going to have 4 main pages and maybe 5 posts under each (silo)

He has a site now with an aged URL. PR3 Not that that matters either but it is about 10 years old and been around a while. His site now is on the 3rd pages and beyond for some keywords. The content is very thin like 100 words or so on each pages (5 pages)

I guess my question is would it be wise to just make a whole new website on a different URL and maybe link from the old domain to the new site for some link juice? or would it be ok if I was to totally redo his old site and see if his ranking can come back with a lot of new fresh unique content.

If I redo it I will not loose any rank or anything will I?

Also another question. I am thinking about having a warrior here do a PBN for me.
I do have about 5 same niche sites that have been around a while. I was almost thinking that I actually have a PBN in a way. BUT they are mostly on one hosting shared plan. So If I was to get a different host for all 5 and then link them together. would that be beneficial? OR since they have been registered to me and I have them on same Host now, I would get slapped by Google leaving a foot print?

You should re-do the site, no need to start over. A site doesn't get "penalized" for being "shallow" in content.

There is a difference between ranking on the 3rd page because your site just isn't optimized well, and being on the 3rd page because you are being PUNISHED (penalized.) Do you see the difference?

To skip forward for a moment, if you go with that PBN, you might get penalized. That's the kind of stuff you want to avoid if you want stability in your business.

Back to the main question, about re-doing the website or starting over. Re-do it.

1 - Go through EVERY post on the site, and re-write them up to 400-500 words. If the posts are literally just placeholders right now just to take up space, delete them and start over. This is fine to do.

2 - After you update the site with new, fresh, thorough content in each of your posts, start building some backlinks. Google will notice that you updated your site with new/better content and it will re-evaluate your placement in the search engines as such.

Rinse and repeat until you get the results you want. No sense in starting from scratch when you don't have to.

Don't shoot yourself in the foot with those **** PBN's!

Agreed, rework the site because 3rd page in the SERPs isn't getting any traffic so you really have nothing to lose.

If you had pages already ranked #1 that's a different story, tread lightly with page/domain overhauls.

    Thanks Adam and Yukon

So it is ok to redo the whole website with no problem (considering done right) ? He had someone make his site. Not sure what he used. I was going to move it over to a WP site and rework the whole thing. Would that be good?

Adam you said "Don't shoot yourself in the foot with those **** PBN's!"

Did you mean me turning my domains into a PBN as described above or a PBN in general?

Thanks again guys for the great info and fast response.

Ah dang... one more question If I make the new site and it is named abc now is it ok to have all the info for xyz on the website. Does that look ok in general to have a URL with a different name than the actual business?

You could trash the existing site and install wordpress on the domain - then install a free 404 wordpress plugin that will re-direct visitors to no longer existing pages to the home page

Wordpress has its faults (especially theme bleed), so I suggest you research the various options available to silo wordpress in order to improve on the usual wordpress site you would get - which may not be much better than what you have now regarding search rankings

Was the site penalized in the past? If not, then don't start with a new domain. Revamp the old site and flesh the content out.

As for the PBN, how powerful are the 5 domains hosting the 5 niche sites? Their authority is the most important factor that determines whether they'll be suitable for use in a PBN or not.

Not sure if this will work . a few are on same host. Not sure if I was to separate them to different hosting accounts. But they are registered to me so not sure but may leave a foot print.

There are 2 sites about the same PR1, DA 35 PA 44 Moz Rank 4.78

Sucky but one of these does not rank well at all. On page is good. Links are pretty good. but have sites on first page with either hardly NO links. No On page or Both and they are on front page. Does not make sense.

If you redo your website and switch to a new domain name, then you need to use a 301 permanent redirect, in order for the link juice, page rank and ranking to be transferred. After you have transferred the website to the new domain and you have made the redirect, you need to place a change of address at GWT.

It may take time until you get your link juice and ranking transferred to the new domain.

Also it is wise to keep the old domain renewed and redirect.

Maybe I did not phrase it right...

My brother owns the domain name. wizardxxxxx.com The actual site setup is from someone else. He hosts it for a year at a time and installed the site.

So I want to basically make a whole new site on WP under the name wizardxxxx.com

So if I redo the whole thing I do not need any redirects or anything like that right? Will be the same URL. But I would like to have all the content/Logo company name different than URL name..

    Does that make sense?

    Thanks
