Why this site was filtered by google?

We run a large movie site. Over 70 000 registered users. Thousands of movie comments, user walls, etc.

We made a couple of 301 redirects to remove the filter. But this gives us only a short temporary effect (1 week).

Thank you.

it looks like it is distributing copyrighted material. That could be a reason.

Most of those kind of sites are also serving up tons of malware. Is yours?

Yes it is. Users submit links. But other sites in this niche work fine even with pop-ups and pop-unders.
    We do not serve malware.
    Thanks for your reply.

Well there you go. That's probably the reason. It is providing links to material that is being distributed against copyright laws.

So what? Torrents also do that, but Google serp is full of torrents.
Please lets talk about SEO or optiization problems. Thanks.

I never said they catch every single one of them, but when you are starting out running something that is illegal, you are already fighting a losing battle.

Search engine traffic is never going to be a long-term solution for a site like that.

But if you want to talk about optimization, what do you mean by the site is "filtered"?

Explain the term "filter". I've never heard anybody use "Google" and "Filter" together in a sentence. Try and find the correct word for it.

    Penalized?
    Deindexed?

Just got back from a #BrightonSEO. I was given room 404 in the hotel I stayed at. Couldn’t find it anywhere!

    10x traffic drop
And no manual actions in WMT.

And the traffic drop was all search engine traffic, not any other sources?

You said you did a couple of redirects.

So the original site was hit, then you redirected it to a new site?

If that is the case, penalties (algorithmic or manual) will follow you through a 301 redirect.

    Only google traffic dropped.

Yes, sometimes 301 redirect works. The site had 4-5 PR on the main page.

      The PR does not matter.

The original site got penalized. The penalty is just following you every time you do a redirect.

You need to figure out what is wrong with the original site if you want to fix it.

It is likely either a problem with low quality links, or more likely Google just knocking it down because it is promoting illegal activity, for which there is no fix for.

A common misconception that people have is that Disavowing links will return their rankings right back to where they were. You have to remember that before being caught in Penguin, a lot of those links were what was causing the site to rank in the first place.

So it could be that you now just have a much weaker link profile.

I completely disagree with what your site provides. It's like people who commit insurance fraud. They just make everything cost more for the rest of us.

However, if you are going to promote a site like that, I would not bother with search engine traffic, or at least not direct search engine traffic. Social media, CPA ads, and sites that funnel traffic to the main site would be a much better way to go.

Mike, I know that Disavow tool is not a 100% solution. We don't have any manual actions at the moment. So I wanted to find out something I don't see, thats why I came here

What to do in this case? Use 301 redirects forever? Or start from scratch?

    Are you tracking rankings?

Sometimes a big traffic drop is not as catastrophic as people think. A lot of times it is just a few big keywords dropping 3-4 spots.

Did you see anything like that or more like everything dropping out of the top 100?

Yes I track 1000 keywords in top 10. (my custom software)
This site had mostly long tail keywords traffic

I'm telling you, google removed all movie pages from top 10.
