Losing PR, SERP, etc...

This seems to be on of the most popular topics here.
Why do I drop, rise, drop, fall, go off a cliff...

What I am about to say will probably ruffle a lot of feathers, as
they will perceive I know little. I will admit I know little. So, I
am looking at this from purely a logical and objective way. It is
also not personal. It is not directed at anyone, nor is it in any
way done with a mean spirit, but it may be read as such.

People assume too much. They assume there is some SEO god in
the background pulling strings. If their site drops, it must be
something supernatural or sinister. But just look at how many websites there
are. How many site owners there are. How many competing SEO
experts there are.

I look at SERPs, PR, etc. and my sites as being teams in a sports
league. The same way Laker fans cannot understand why after
winning 3 championships in a row, they can't get back on top for
over 6 years. They cannot fathom why the almighty Lakers (and yes
I am a fan) drop out and take years to get back on top. The
reason is what could be the same reason why people's sites drop.
The Lakers are not the only basketball team. Each year, at least
a dozen or more teams are spending money, trading, etc, to get
their team on top. They are competing with the Lakers. The
reason the Lakers cannot win a championship each and every year
is because there are other teams working harder.

It may not be the complete answer, but we must admit that just
because on the last Monday in May, 2009, we were #1 on google,
does not mean that on the first Friday of June 2009, we will be
in the same spot. Who knows how many other site owners are
competing with us for keywords, SEO, backlinks, etc. We must
give some credit for our fall to other site owners doing more
right stuff than we are.

Perhaps I missed it, as I do not come to WF as much as I used
to. But I can't recall someone ever mentioning that we are
competing with other sites that on any given day, may be
better than ours.

Maybe someone can answer this question:
If I get my site #1 on google for my chosen keyword/keyphrase,
can I relax, sit back, and expect it to stay there without doing
anything?

Because like I said, it is a popular topic to start out
with, "I was #1 on google, now not even on the first page."

If your site drops, it may not be a case of something you did
wrong, but something someone else did right.
