Is it possible to outrank yelp and place above the google places? I am finding it very difficult and alot of my geo targeted keywords are coming up below the fold under the places.

Sure it can be done and I've seen numerous instances. Have seen 301 redirects do it besides high PR links.

I'm not finding it to be easy at all. The yelp listings especially seem to be strong ranking even with little to no reviews.

Have gotten the feeling that Yelp and Big G are in bed together. I mean, why would a search engine serve up the search function yelp page ahead of a local biz's website?

I would figure a key word focused page would outrank a yelp page even with little to no backlinks

ya **** yelp. Im not sure why big g hasn't bought yelp off to begin with. I get even more furious when I put tons of work of perfecting a pages on page optimization and I see some whack ass yelp listing of a phony company ranking above me. Furious. I even dump some niche related back links on it and I still see them ranking ahead of me months later. Google needs to straighten out there algo and push less influence on those stupid yelp rankings especially the fakers.
