Searching through related links

When you are looking for potential websites to get links from I have heard you should search for them by the keyword of your site that you want to rank for. But my thought is that the keyword you want to rank for is used by COMPETITION. Wouldn't it be better to search for a keyword RELATED to yours instead?

For example, if I had a site I wanted to rank for the keyword "strange weather" I thought it may be better to find sites by searching for those with keywords such as "blizzard in summer".

I was thinking this may be an easier way to find sites willing to link to you. But I wasn't sure if it would be as good for SEO. What are your thoughts?

What does it matter if your competitors are using the same keywords to search for potential link sources? You can still outrank your competitors whether they are getting backlinks from the same sources as you or not.

I was just thinking about "link juice" mainly. My question was how would it effect SEO to be linked to by pages with different keywords but ones that are still related?

As long as the keywords you are targeting for are keywords that are relevant to your website and exist on your website content, then it is effective.

My advise is to target for long tail keywords or keywords with low competition, but when you dominate these keywords, you should start targeting for better keywords.

You should plan a well though and clear strategy to rank your website.
