High or low competition better in google keyword planner?

Hi guys, first time posting. I am new to affiliate advertising and am learning heaps, but have come across some conflicting info. I was under the impression that when researching keywords in the Google Keyword planner you wanted high search results with low competition. I have just read that in fact you want high competition as well, as this means the keyword will be easier to convert into paying traffic. This now has me confused, as I understand that good keyword research is what gets you - hopefully - money coming through your affiliate advertising, so don't want to get this wrong.

Could someone please explain what is the best way to read this tool, as I thought I had it figured out until I read this comment (from backlinko.com).

    Google keyword planner tool is the best tool for keyword research.
    1. If using this tool for SEO keywords then "high search results with low competition"
    2. If using this tool for PPC or advertising keywords then "high search results with high competition".

    Remember that the competition in Google Keyword Planner Tool is for PPC and not SEO competition.

    Generally high competition means that it is a lucrative keyword, but that's not a rule set in stone.

        There is no tool that does it accurately. You have to investigate the competition yourself.

        You can use Market Samurai or Long Tail Pro. However, you'll still need to evaluate the competition manually by checking how optimised their sites are on-page and off-page.

        - Did they include the keyword in their titles?
        - How many backlinks do they have?
        - What's the age of their domain name?

        ...among others.

          Thanks guys, I have a trial of long tail pro so might compare that to Google Keywords in terms of results.

          EDIT; sorry, so just to clarify, if i was to try and monetize a website with Clickbank etc, high search and low competition would be the way to go, and if i was using PPC, high competition would be better?

            The competition in the Google Keyword Planner is a measure of the level of competition among AdWords advertisers. It has NOTHING to do with SEO.

            One could say that a "high" competition there is a good indication that it is a profitable keyword. If people are willing to spend money on the ads, then there is probably money to be made there.

            Whereas a "low" competition COULD be a sign that the keyword is not profitable.

    Don`t use GKP cos that`s are AdWords results, not organic.

    Use tools like keyword revealer or market samurai to check competition of the keywords.

    The competition in the google keyword planner refers to how many advertisers are paying for those keywords to appear in Adwords. It has nothing - absolutely nothing to do with the SEO competitions.

    So you want it to be high - meaning this is a highly paid niche.

    SEO Difficulty you'll have to assess it separately, google keyword tool does not tell you that.
