Hi guys,

My website has been slipping in the google rankings slowly over the last few months so have just started a lot of research to try and better optimize my site.

Part of this has been looking over competitors backlinks, an area which I've really slacked on, but upon reviewing competitors backlinks see some very strange sites in there and on further investigation have
absolutely no idea what they actually are? To me they look like article directories?

and a lot lot more, which are riddled with anchor text and back links to competitors site and I can't figure out if this is something that I should be doing to? Are these article submission sites that I should stay clear of? Very very confused at this moment!

it's a private blog network most likely. I would remove those links from your post, as it's "unethical" to disclose them. do a bit of studying on private blog networks and you'll understand why you shouldn't publicly link to those sites - as you wouldn't like people linking to yours if you had one.

you can buy PBN links from WF or blackhatworld, or read how to begin making your own.. Or buy one from Mike Anthony.. or whatever.. PBN's are pretty much the only way to rank right now for small businesses.

Just got back from a #BrightonSEO. I was given room 404 in the hotel I stayed at. Couldn’t find it anywhere!

      thanks ICEMATRIX, deleted those links,

Been looking all day long and couldn't figure out what they actually are! I'm away to the google machine now to have a look at what they are? Are the considered blackhat, whitehat?

They are from private blog networks, a network of sites set up solely for the purpose of publishing articles with links to monetized websites to boost their Google rankings.

There are many sellers of PBN links and you can find them on Internet marketing forums like the Warrior forum.

Article directory links are the worst and won't help you rank and will cause you problems with the next Penguin update, if they haven't already.

PBN's, paid links, homepage links, those are all what make the world go around. A solid network can push sites to page one without a problem.

One network I'm apart of is literally my only linking strategy for my sites and they've help solid rankings for quite some time.

Sure my rankings could plummet any day because I'm playing with fire, but I diversify by building other sites with other links. That way if one tanks, I've got another one right behind it. If they don't tank I've got two properties on page one for my main keywords.
